Excellent suggestion, Doyle. I knew the crop/composition was off but did not get the feel on this one as to how to fix. (And yes... the other shot has hot spots). Thanks!!!!!! --Regards, Jan

Jan: Better shot with MUCH better exposure. I would pull up that lower crop to take advantage of the strong diagonal line provided so naturally for you by this guy! :)

Thanks, AJ. It does seem a challenging way to take pictures; lots of patience, luck and a good piece of telephoto glass makes a big difference. My 300 mm is low end and quite soft at the 300 mm side; but for beginner efforts I will stick with it. USEFILM is a great forum to get encouragement, ides, and help. --Best to you, Jan

Thanks, Srna. If the birds would just hold still and strike a pose it would be much easier. :) :) --Best to you, Jan

Definitely prefer this one for the various reasons already mentioned. And like you, UF has encouraged me to photograph subjects I would not otherwise have considered, and discovered wonderful things about them in the process.

I agree, Lydia, and thanks for the comment. The other one has some hot spots. Although I used a 300mm I was not as close as I would like to have been and had to crop the pictures more than I would have liked. I have very little in the way of telephoto hardware and 300 mm was the best I could come up with. No stabiliser and not very good "glass". But enough to get me started. It is amazing how skittish these creatures are and I was lucky on a couple of shots. --Best to you, Jan

Well, keep them coming, Jan - I prefer this one to the other First Attempt, simply because there are no over-exposed spots on this one. What a magnificant bird! How lucky you are to have come close enough for the 300mm lens - the birds in South Africa are much too suspicious to trust me and my camera!
