Joe -- Thanks so much for the comments and for taking the time for an honest critique. It is funny that you pointed this out; I have another version similar to the sample you provided me. I worked this image several ways and finally decided to let the light pieces stay as I thought there was too much black. But in hindsight, with your comment to consider, perhaps going the other way would have been better. I was operating at a "gut" level and when I compared them I convinced myself to leave it the way it was. Go figure and I do appreciate and respect the time and opinion you have given me.

Very nice abstract Jan. Good eye on this one. Interesting lines, patterns and textures. Good use of the light as well. Nicely composed. Since this is a Critiquer's Corner image I have one comment, I think I would have removed the lighter bar underneath. Something like this.

I agree, Mel. The lack of RAW support is inexcusable. Now that I am puttering around with the G7 I really feel the impact of no RAW. Had to radically adjust my thinking about what resolution to shoot with and sometimes just too much is lost in reducing JPEG to usable web format. Also lack of RAW takes away the 16 bit support as well as narrowing the exposure range tolerance.

Well thats an awful shame, Jan, they certainly are legitimate complaints! I guess if they were trying to keep the camera smaller the lcd might be forgivable....but no RAW??? come on!

Jan Hoffman Jan Hoffman   {K:39467} 3/26/2007
Mel -- There are plenty of reviews on the G7 and all that I have seen have the same two complaints. These are legitimate complaints and for the life of me I cannot figure out what Canon engineers were thinking. My only guess is that it has something to do with marketing and how they distinguish their various products. But given that, the G7 is supposed to be their top of the line point-and-shoot -- so go figure!

I'm disappointed to read that the G7 doesn't support RAW, or have a tilt lcd screen, Jan! I have a very old (relatively) G2 which has both!! How strange that they've reverted with the later G series....now I'll have to go see the reviews on it.

Thanks so much, Doyle. The G7 has an optical viewfinder and an LCD viewer. The LCD is not on a tilt frame (Bah!). It has many good points but no RAW and tilt-frame are major canon booboos.

Wow Jan. Great abstract and detail. John made a great point about a thin white inner border but cool. Moi? An inspiration? I think you don't need a whole lot of inspiration . . . you (and Annemette) have some of the greatest and most unique ideas! So this G7 has a view from the top?

Way to go Mel! I got to it just fine. Great image for that purpose . . . I went out to price them but may have spent this week's allowance on a new D-200 instead!!

Thanks, Mel. I could not get the link to work but I can get to the section just before the last part of the link. I will try to find it by drilling down later tonight.

AJ -- To the last comment, yes-- a Canon G7 is compact and easy to hold with one hand. Probably like the Casio in that respect.
As for this photo, I agree: I think the frame is not the best I could have offered and I agree the white line would have helped a lot.
Thanks for your comments.

Great concept resulting in a fine abstract with great textures. I'm going to take issue with the frame though - I find the image runs into it just a little too much, especially along the top and right. Maybe the addition of a single pixel white inner border would help?

AJ

PS. Oh, and I've just realised that your hat-from-the-hip-shot WAS using a compact...

Mel -- "Big Mouth" Robin just turned you in and told me that one of your LB photos is being used in an LB advert. Congrats and I hope to see it someplace. If it is online you should give us the link so we can see it and make snarky remarks about how you have "sold out" to the Man. :) :)

Take care...Robin

ps...hope she doesn't mind my big mouth but, our friend Ms. Mel had one of her LB shots chosen for a Lensbaby ad. April issue of "Outdoor Photographer"! :)

Hi, Mel. Thanks for your comments. I do like the G7, a fine camera (if it only supported RAW it would be perfect) but I am still using my digital SLR quite a bit for event photography and work that needs more heavy lifting than the G7 offers. I was inspired by Doyle Chastain when he posted some pictures that he would otherwise would not have taken if he hadn't taken a small, lightweight camera with him. So based on his approach I purchased and started carrying around the G7 as a point-and-shoot. I often would not take the SLR but now when I travel, even on short trips, the G7 is handy in my pocket or on my belt.
I have no preference as to looking through the SLR or at the LCD screen of the G7 but find that each causes me to have a different point of view. The G7 allows for some angles that my bad back would not permit if I had to crouch or lean with the SLR.

I have to say, I like the composition here, Jan. The lines and shapes and curves all come together so well. G7 would have to be a great camera for all these shots you do of mundane items, its so easy to shoot without having to put the camera up to the eyes! Have you totally forsaken your SLR now?
