Hi James,
I have not done too many shots in the dark with either the D70 or D80 really. Although there might be improvements in that area for your camera if you update your firmware, if you haven't already. It might fix some of the bugs or short comings it has.
As to the lens problem i am myself getting the 18-200mm Nikkor VR lens. That way i will have covered 12mm through to 200mm with only 2 lens plus no need for tripods or monopods The 18-200mm is light and small good for traveling and if you are in a pinch you can leave all your other lens behind. It's not a F2.8 lens but because of the VR capabilities it effectively is one, because of the lower speeds it can shoot hand held. It will allow for a 4 stop improvement for any shot. I also looked at the 70-300mm Nikkor VR lens but it is not as good a lens in general as the 18-200mm.
not sure if that is what you are looking for but that is the way i am going.

hi tim. i've only shot about 5500 photos on my D70 in 18 months. certainly not a lot so i imagine it will last a long time. not happy with the night photos i get from it though. my fuji seems to do a lot better in that respect. not sure what the problem is but maybe i just need to practice practice and practice more.
i have not moved back to canada, although i do want to visit home again soon. maybe in the late summer and stay for two or three months to look around, visit my family and take some fall photos in october, then come back to china. i plan a trip to the far west of china, gansu (where i shot those desert photos) and xinjiang, karakul lake area on the border with tadjikistan and kyrgyzstan and so on. and this time shoot all the photos in RAW, since i didnt do that last time. maybe 5-6 weeks out there then home for two months, then back here by mid or end october.
i have a 70-300mm nikkor G lens, and an 18-50mm sigma DC lens, what would you recommend as an "in between those two" lens? i really want something with f2.8, so i need to spend more cash, but not sure what to get. have you any ideas?

Well the D80 seems to perform well enough. I like the addition of the auto ISO that has a max setting and the level of image saturation has more options. The color interpretation is different from the D70 but not in a negative way, just different. The battery does not last anywhere near the time line of the D70. But the biggest factor in the switch from the D70 was the fact that i wore it out. I think I shot some where near 150,000 images and the shutter just gave out. The Images from the D70 don't eat as much Hard Drive space. But it then it is nice to have more pixels to play with. I also find the metering faster. So when things are happening in a hurry it doesn't miss a beat. Another thing that i thought of, is that the D80 is a little smaller and i think lighter, a good thing to me as i travel all most as much as you. The long and short of it is I am very happy with the D80 it is getting me what i want image wise. I wouldn't just run out and buy a D80 if the D70 you have is still good. It is not that much better
