Excellent lighting and surely one thing as you say to the title...a very dad little face that gives that mood to the watcher, a very nice portrait dear Vanessa...and I know that lovely face wasn't for long time like that...she is not like a sun shining from her lovely smile!

This is my favorite shot of the two Vanessa, the shading and Black and White format add a little more weight to the composition and your title. She looks so forlorn waiting. I believe that photographs have the power to tell a story and bring the viewer into that world. This one does that for me. Hope Hollie gets home soon.

Nessa... I have been slowly working my way through your work/pleasure... :) and even tho' a little late on the health of your arm :) I wish both it and you best health ~~GRIN~~...
I tend to get *wordy* but, that is me so won't appologise if that's ok...:)
Would love to comment on every single one... I have looked at all, but, when commenting I like to take time, sit and look at what I see and feel... and then read what others have commented... So, in your case ~~GRIN~~ I'd need a year and a half and then some... Pleasurable yes...
For me, this is perfect just the way it is... NO levels adj or curves etc... The tones are simply beautiful and convey the loneliness of april for her big sister... The catch lights on her hair and in her eyes are delicate, just as april is...:)
Read back further the resizing issue... Depending on what PS you have this is our method if it helps... :)
We have PS7 and run XP PRO... While in PS Re-size by going to file/save for web/ image size, make the longer side 850/apply tab /jpeg maximum and then the quality bar... Adjust so size comes in at closest to 400k... then save tab, your pictures folders will open...
We keep folders just for web size... Then write web after photo details... push save, this will take you back to PS and the bigger sized version... This we do a *save as*... This way we have the original + the PS worked large + the web size...
I'll go now...LOL... Don't want a coffee do you?... ~~GRIN~~ tho' a wine may be a better choice... ;)

ps... Like you I play, and more often than not remembering just what I have done in PS is pure guess work...;)

Vanessa, I'm in love with this portrait. Nothing is so painful to me as the look of sorrow and sadness on a child's face. Which--needless to say--makes it difficult for me to be the disciplinarian in school sometimes. All they have to do is look at me that way and the battle to stay in control is on!

I am so sorry to hear this news my sweet Ness and I hope that you find things easier soon. I can empathise with you in this....I have arthritic thumbs and it is gradually attacking my fingers now, so I can't be sure as to how much longer I can take photos let alone type. Thankyou ray for yourlovely comment,,have been late replying ,,have lost the use of my left arm..been in pain for months ..saw doctor friday ..said it was my tendons..he gave me a ansthestic injection ..said it might help..will take a month to know ..trouble is now i can,t do anything i have lost the grip in my hand ..hopefully this will ease in the next 48 hrs along with the pain..typing with one hand ..so get back to you all when it is easier..hugs nessa

Roll on September Nessa, how well I remember my youngest daughter waiting for her sister..
An excellent candid portrait of the pretty little April sweet Ness. Your lighting here is so dramatic and you cantrace it's path from April's knuckles to her cheek, nose upper lipline into the catchlight in her eye then on to those few highlighted hairs. You have become such an expert in child portraiture my clever girl. For what it is worth from a non-expert I disagree with Clive's suggestion it destroys the mood of the composition IMO.

Vanessa, A nice photo but IMHO the skin tones are too grey. You may have intended it to look a bit dark but I think it looks a little un-natural.
All it needs is a slight adjustment with the level or curve command in photoshop. Here is my suggestion.
