Not a pelt, but the back of a small heifer. Unfortunately there was some assorted 'junk' in the way and I had to crop high.
I'd like to crop higher but I think that would cramp his face and her hand.

I like the expression on the girl’s face. Her eyes are also very powerful and catching. Her father adds incredible depth to the pictures. Really impressive shot

I believe you are completely correct in your observations and have captured a special moment here with this image. The difference in age and expressions certainly says a lot.
What was the father doing? Looks to be a pelt of some sort in the area between the two of them.
