Reflections are good. Movement on the water is nice. But background is not good, because trees are cross with building. There are conflict back plan. We can see the trees reflect on the water but we can't see the top of trees. My comment is a bit merciless :)

didn't see all the other comment's before posting. I think practicality kind of falls away a bit when you start taking reflections :-)

sense of wallpaper falling away from an old painting. might want to try flipping them so they stand up and make them the whole picture, for a different perspective.

Thank you Annemette. Neither of us is a pro, and I appreciate your comment. The boiling effect is the tar bubbling up. This is an actual tar pit, that has been oozing up tar and methane gas since prehistoric times and still continues today. There is an on going excavation project on this pit. Also in the park there are several areas that have sand bags to warn people where more tar has started oozing as seen below

Did I flip, or did you? I like the flip idea and would not have thought of it, but you are the abstract person and I the more practical (no wise cracks)I also seem to like to keep my feet on the ground and not hang upside down. I do like the image you did.

Thank you Joggie, I will be reworking thsi photo. As to the phenomena? Below are three websites that might interest you. Yes, this is natural and every summer there is an excavation project in the pit that the Mastadon and this picture are taken in. Many fossils have been pulled up. http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/quaternary/labrea.html http://www.tarpits.org/research/research.html http://www.tarpits.org/research/pit91/pitfacts.html

Exactly what I felt for, too, in this image! The reflections are marvelous and so is thye colour of the pit. I also like to see how it looks like it´s boiling. A very special place. If you crop out the background leaving the water and reflections the image gets even better, but that is just in my opinion, and I´m no pro!:-) Best wishes, Annemette

You'll Flip over my suggestion . . . This was and is a Great image . . . loved it then and love it now. To emphasize the reflections in this project the cuts suggested a few times by a few people seemed like a good idea . . . but when I cut it to see how it would actually look I wasn't convinced . . . though I'm sure you'll check into that yourself anyway. BUT . . . You might have that BiP yet if you flip the image after the cut. It would make for a very good, very distinct entry (IMO).

I've got to agree with Dave. The upper part of the image detracts from the overall image for me. (And the details aren't very crisp. Needs sharpening? Jpeg compression problem?)
I can see two good pictures here, one cropped leaving a strip of green and one with all the green cropped away.
In the first the bit of non-reflected grass clearly establishes the main image as an reflection.
In the second all the reference to "reality" has been stripped away leaving a more 'abstract' image that requires the viewer to study the frame and think a bit more.
(And consider putting your copyright notification on the frame rather than spoiling the image.)

I love the reflections, they are so very well detailed with excellent colour tones. The composition is good but a bigger impact could be made with the crop as suggested by Dave and Joggie. I continually miss the boat when it comes to cropping my own and we are part of a large club for this Marlyce. I still think it's an imressive capture. Well done to you my dear.....All the best.....Ray

Very interesting Marlyce - the reflections are great with lovely detail. The whir building and bright sky is a bit distractive though. I would go with Dave and opt for a tigther crop just beneath the path, cutting out the clutter of benches and people. Well done anyhow. Joggie (is the tarpit a natural phenomena?)

I think this should be cropped to only show the water, or tar. The tourist area in the background with people wandering about and the activities there take away from your prime subject, in my opinion. I like the reflections but as long as you are not showing the trees to the top, might as well get rid of the embankment.
Looking a little closer, I'd place the crop below the tree trunks and above the edgeline, leaving that bright green strip of grass along the bank.
Best wishes, Dave
