About Inside a 'slot' canyon, carved from beautifully textured sandstone by water and time. The best time to photograph slots is near mid- day when the upper reaches are illuminated, radiating a warm glow that brings out the vibracy of the stone. I hope you enjoy the image as much as I do. The exposure was made at about 20mm, F22 at 8 seconds with no filters. There was no significant PS work other than sharpening.

I have just been wandering through your portfolio and am really impressed by the quality of your work. I also appreciate the comments you leave describing how you achieved each shot. You mentioned in your profile that you are willing to critique images, I am a serious amature and, while I mostly shoot florals, I have a few of landscapes in my portfolio. I would deeply appreciate your comments.

You took it up a notch over the standard slot canyon shot, incredibly rich colors, camera angle really gives allusion of movement. Nice work.

Micheal, this is in the Escalante. There are dozens of similar canyons too numerous to mention, some technical and others just a scramble. Since moving digital this past year I really do little or no bracketing. The instant feedback on Canon's huge, bright LCD screen is good enough for me, especially in a dim slot canyon. In rare situations I may take one or two bracketed exposures as I did often with film.

Very beautifully composed and executed. Michael K.'s point on difficulty of execution is well made. Just curious, when you shoot how much bracketing of exposure do you do? Is this in the Escalante?

I always love shots like these... usually they seem to have a lot of "pop" but I like that this one is toned down a bit. Great work!

Marc:

Slot canyons are special - the midday sun is the best way to get that nice radiant warmth into the scene.

The hardest thing to get right is to balance the tones in these shots - I took some photos and always get bright light from above and cool shadows underneath - but when you are there the whole sides appear to radiate. Hard to describe and capture on film.
