Excuse me -- I didn't mean to really say that Nathan doesn't know what he is talking about when it comes to journalism shots. Just reread that comment and realized how arrogant it sounded -- good grief. What I meant to say was I am not sure I totally agree with Nathan and I'm not sure he was right on the button with this particular shot. Ahem...and I really like it too, by the way. Love the girls' face and the view of the blown out ceiling in the background. NIce job.

Honestly I am not sure Nathan knows what he is talking about when it comes to journalism shots. I think this is a great shot either way and I don't think it matter which lense is used -- journalism uses nice shots too, not just to fill space. We have a photographer here who uses all kind of shots, wide, yadda, yadda and it looks good anyhow. Course..that is just my opinion.

Perhaps a little less wide angle might make this a more effective shot from a journalism standpoint, but I've seen uses of wide angle like this in some papers, however it is by no means common. I like the setup of the shot a lot. I think the girl's presence is excellent. Good work.

Though I like this shot, it?s not exactly 'press friendly' Change the lens. As photographers, we see this shot and know it was taken with a wide angle lens. Most people would neither know nor care what the lens was and would simply think it?s screwed up, and what was the editor thinking yadda yadda yadda. See what I'm getting at here?
Press needs photos to fit the story. Though somebody?s house getting hit by lightning is definitely interesting, I don?t see how this shot would compliment the article, or even the byline.
Don?t get me wrong, I like the shot, but as far as being a good journalist shot, I don?t think so.
However my words are opinions and I could be completely wrong. I don?t work for a daily paper, just one of the alternative weeklies and things are done a wee bit differently at the weeklies as opposed to the dailies.
HTH and feel free to email me if you want; nathan@nathankennett.com
