Great shot of the kestrel, Marcus. The clarity and composition are really nice. My personal preference is to have colors pop a bit more. I played around briefly with the levels in PS Elements and came up with a rough idea of my preference. Just a preference. Your photo is fine as it is. Steve

Obviously he was waiting for you to get off this excellent shot! If pushed to make suggestions, I would say that the some of edges are very hard, especially along his back, either from oversharpening or masking. And his eyes might benefit from a brightening of the catchlights there. Nonetheless this is fine work that I truly envy. ;-) --George

Excellent pic of an old female american kestrel, I can see her age in the stripe feathers of the chest and in the color of her hands and pic, almost orange!

hi and thanks for recent feedback to me...nice to have some comments from those who appreciate different techniques... stellar job with the feather details and natural hues...he appears to be posing for you,Marcus...what a pretty and confident looking bird!...as far as improvements,on my monitor the sky BG has a periwinkle hue leaning more toward lilac than blue (perhaps your pref?) and there is a halo/rim lighting from head to full length of body on left as viewed...maybe from sharpening?...great timing and exposure,Marcus regards, gayle

Static or flaying the quality always there, the background enhances the subject where the sharp details is of great. I like the fill frame composition choice. Saeed

Hi Marcus, Typically one of your photos. Very good capture, with not much to critique, It'll do great in an ornithology book! The only thing I can think of is to tweak the hue of the sky a bit, as the current tone looks a bit flat on my screen. A wee bit more saturation and ease down on the red levels, maybe reducing the brightness of the sky could also push the contrast between the Kestrel and the sky a bit, making the bird stand out a bit stronger.
Either way, a very well composed shot, and a great level of sharpness and details. Very good shot.
Cheers,
hugo

Thanks for the nice critique Adrian, I guess at 3am with many kestrels already posted I just want to get the title over with. So are you saying that if the title were "dark eyes" the dead eyes would be ok :). Its hard to use fill flash from 50 yard away, but I have been looking for a flash extender.... Thanks again..

This is a fine photo of a bird, but I really hate the 'cute' title! Birds always appear to be looking at you, when you are looking at them. What's wrong with '(Something) Kestrel' (if that is what it is).
I also find the eyes a bit 'dead', a particular problem if the title is 'Looking At You'. A spot of fill-in flash, to put a sparkle in the eyes, would have improved the image, I reckon.
