Joggie:
Excellent write up, I suspected a ring flash since they theoretically produce better results, but this really proves it for me.

Hi Michael - Sorry, I forgot to mention the flash. I got hold of an old Sunpak GX8R ringflash. A powerful flash, using 4 C-size (LR14) batteries and with a strength control of 1/4, 1/2 and full strength. I have to put all control on manual though. What I do for max DoF is to put the flash on full strength and underexpose by 0.3 or 0.7 fstops. On -0.7, I then gain some speed and with my macro/converter set-up can take shots at 1/250th - 1/300th sec at f5.6 - f22 depending on the external light, distance from the subject and the subject's reflective value. Without the macroconverter I have about 2 - 3 fstops more light available and also gain a lot on the speed. Everything is set on manual, including the focus which is critical while the DOF button does not work with the converter attached. I experiment a lot with different angles and may take a lot of photos (if the subject allows) and then often only use a few. Hope it helps - Take care. Joggie

Thanks for your comments and time spent on my portfolio Michael, appreciated! Regarding your question - I've developed a system for the extreme close-ups (with 2.75X Macro converter) where I can shoot at 1/320th sec at f11 or f16 and if the subject allows (bright, light coloured - f18). When I use only my 105mm micro lense, without the macro converter, I can go up to 1/6000th sec at f32. As you can see, at these speeds there is no problem with shake. I do like to use a monopod in many instances, but not with the camera fixed to it. I only use it as a rest for the hand that hold the camera. Where the subject is close to the ground I use my body and elbows. Take care. Joggie

Cripes, looking through the whole suite of macros, and I have to wonder how you manage to get such high F stop with the shutter speed...
Do you use a particular flash setup to get these shots? Most of the lighting is so natural with good highlights, no blown out details, and really sharp.

Thanks Shirley and others for the comments - Normally, chameleons and other reptiles lay eggs, which hatch outside of the body (oviparous). In some species though, the eggs (with yolk etc.) are retained within the female's body and hatch within. The hatched young are then "born" alive (ovi-viviparous). Regards. Joggie

What an interesting bit about chameleons - which I did NOT know.... how are the others born Joggie??? A superb shot - absolutely stunning. Thank you so much for sharing these pics with us - where would one ever have seen this otherwise?? Best regards Shirley
