I found your work off of a friend's site and appreciate all of your pictures. This one especially in b & w. I couldn't imagine the city in any other way. Plus, the images of the smoke are mesmerizing, as if they really are moving.

Love it! The steam from the man hole cover in the lower right, which is simple and separated from everything else, provides a great contrast to the rest of the scene.

Maybe my favourite of the three (undecided between I and III) for the perfect urban mood, the taxi cab is a right element in this composition, but also the perspective, the smoke and the few people work very well, I’m not sure about the focus, I would have liked more a deeper DOF, even if also in this way the photo is fascinating me. I like this series. I found excellent the choice of the tonal range and contrasts. They give a perfect idea of "suburban" enviroment.
Very well defined object in the frame that gave me the curiosity look around all the details, the sign (no parking), people, cars,... really fine!

well finally i see your series, also yesterday i have tried,.. is always BIG, this one (maybe) is the "normal" shot.. but i'm sure that for me is impossibile create a similar photo..
i love the square format like a holga style.. and the perfect atmosphere in b/W

Hi Ina, thanks for your comment. This is the last one in the series, as I only work in triptyches (at least on Usefilm) And three is already a croud..;)
I find it very interesting to see who prefers which one, and so far, the spread is quite evenly divided. Also, I find it pretty amaizing that you pick the exact same items in this photo I did when I was looking for a third (more or less) matching photo in combination with the other two. Thanks!

Hi Hugo, this one is my favorite of the trio (so far) - it has all the elements of the Big Apple: the vents, the cab, the street signage, the horizontal stripes and the verticals of the columns, the hurried passers-by, plus a few graffitti to boot. Love this one as well, Hugo...marvelous movement to it. Another in a superb series.
As an aside, I had to laugh...I tilted my head to read the graffiti on the vent stack while drinking a cup of coffee. It's so embarrassing when one forgets the laws of physics when immersed in a photograph.
...felt rather like a cat after skidding on a slick floor and smacking into the wall. I'm not sure, but I may've licked my hands, while adopting a nonchalant pose amid the scattered guffaws.

Hi Hugo,
this time, it looks a bit deserted in comparison to the other images. The vent and the cab gets more attention by this - which I like. There is some grain in the steam though which you might work on.

yes, it's the same steam pipe as in the first one. I see your point, and I think the first one is the strongest one too, because, (as you described already) the composition is rather complex, yet well balanced. It assists the viewer in focussing on the main theme: the Subway Vents. Randy made a very useful remark, saying the steam pipe in this one splits the scene in a defined left and right side, which makes it more vertically oriented. I think that allows each individual object to become more "stand alone", and even obstructive. This one lacks the unity between the objects, I believe.

Hi Randy, thanks for your comment, as usual, very indepth and constructive! Due to those comments, I became to see the split in the image much clearer (hadn't looked at it that way before...)
As to showing a bit more on top, I think you have a very valid point too, another new insight! I need to see if that's possible, as I can only access this version right now. In the previous one, I know there was a rather overexposed sky, as I needed to measure on the darker parts to retain the details and contrasts there. I remember cropping the over exposed part out on purpose, but maybe I could've panned up a bit. The square format here is a deliberate choice, though. I also shot quite alot of Medium Format images, and I wanted to create a unity within the whole series (about 75 images in total, all B&W, all square - it gives a rahter broad overview of NYC through the eyes of a visitor)

It is the same steampipe as in the first image, isn't it? I must say this first one is still my favourite; in the first place because of its composition. It is difficult to explain, but it feels more balanced than this one. As I mentioned already, the particular arrangement of foreground elements 'drew me into the scene'. The steaming drain cover is not able to achieve the same effect here (although it makes a nice combination with the large steam pipe). The plant stand is even kind of obstructive. All in all, not a bad shot, and still very much New York City - it is just that the first one was better :)

Another great B&W image Hugo. What strike me in all three of the series is the combination of and contrast between the modern buildings and cars and the antique mood created by the steam rising from the underground vents. Great work.

What I find interesting in this piece is that the image is almost split into the two halves, right and left, and the elements on one side as they invite comparison to their counterpart on the other. For instance the the steam pipe to the columns, the pedestrian and taxi, the large rising plume of steam and the small puff from the man hole cover,the two signs, and the two styles of architechure on each side. Good street composition, But I might like to see more included at top, maybe another inch, a little more space for both the steam and eyes to escape to.

Hi José, Thanks for you comment. When I visited New York, the choice for B&W wasn't difficult. The city is very much alive, and has a nice combination between the elements and life on the streets and the imposing skyscrapers that tower out above the bristle of cars, commuters and tourists. With the cold February (2005) air, B&W was the only way to grab the atmosphere...

This is a briljant shot, i think this one and nr. 2 are the best shots, really dramatic scene created by the b&w and the smoke. Nice detail is the smoke on the right, that creates a band between the left and the right part of the picture. The typical NY taxi is really nice to. Becose the taxi is 'timeless' it fits in wonderfull making it an old and a modern picture. Really nice job.
