And I like this one too! Regarding that ship: if you had waited ten minutes it would be steaming out of the image. Maybe another solution would be a little surruptitious PS work - by all means move the ship to the right, but switch its direction at the same time (and don't tell anyone...)

Thanks Ray . . . my initial thought was that the cloud shadow would balance the overall composition . . . basically a right side and center (lifeguard) balanced by a left side and center (ship) . . . especially since the road is low and the shadow much higher. Keeping the three layers of color and texture roughly equal . . . I can't help but wonder if the balance wouldn't be too right-side heavy if the ship were there . . . but I suspect it would not and that Hugo may have been right. Too bad I didn't wait and get both shots but it's amazing how slow those ships seem to go!

In some ways Hugo is right about there being an inbalance to the composition but for me I don't see this as a weakness. There again I don't, these days, get many opportunities to compose land or seascapes due to health reasons. I love the 'quiet' day the lifeguards are sure to be enjoying and again I love the movement in the water. Best wishes....Ray

Thank you dear Hugo. Your comments are always honest and critical (therefore valuable) and it's reare indeed to read such praise from you! I fear the right side crop would throw off the balance of the photo, perhaps making it either too tall, or centering two items, throwing off the composition even more. I couldn't agree more about waiting ten minutes . . . of course that's one option I do NOT have. These "boats" apparently don't understand art and simply won't wait or return ;).
As J Esford told me . . . timing is everything. The divisions were due in part to a suggestion by Steve A. on the previous work. . . . a great suggestion. You made my day Hugo.

Very good addition to the series, Doyle!

To me, there are four important elements in this photo: the trawler, the cloud over the sea, the lifeguard cabin and the road most of which are located on the left side of the image.

I think that creates a slight unbalance in the photo, yet it fits nicely; maybe the single sided location of these elements would call for a crop on the right side, though.

An other option would be to wait about 10 minutes for the trawler to reach the right side of this composition, letting the elements create a imaginary diagonal from lower left to upper right.

The division sky, sea and beach is spot on, and the photo provides a very pleasant feel. Very nice shot!

Cheers,

Hugo

Scatto meraviglioso! La piccola costruzione da' un senso di pace e tranquillita', in contrapposizione al mare mosso...
