About Many thanks to AAT SA, David Bourke, Dino Lupani and Giorgio Goretti who kindly commented on the 1st version.

I've implemented David Bourke's suggestion to lessen contrast in fg. It's less dramatic this way but I think is better.

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to comment and for your suggestions. :-)

absolutely wonderful shot; like these reflections in water - they make magic atmosphere;
well composed - considered;

Very nice toning, and composition. My only nitpick would be the impression of declining horizon (no one mentioned it, its surely a minor point but an idiosyncrasy of me...).

An excellent shot, beautifully composed. The tones in this are truly wonderful, and the figures in the frame add just the right touch. All I can say is.....Bravo!

wonderful...

David Bourke (K:1,269) - Jun 24, 2005
Nice composition and a trully gorgeous sky. Though if it is possible to decrease the contrast in the foreground would be nice.

Very great bw, congrats!!!

More important, Lily, what you YOU think? It's your image (and a very good one). But personally I do think this looks a bit more like water should... but it is a little soft, so I quite see why you wanted to sharpen it. A difficult call. I'm so glad you take my comments in the spirit in which they are meant! It's very refreshing...

Roger, Sorry I had deleted that version, It was darker and closer to a B/W. The sharpening algorithm must think it is running into "edges" when it encounters the surf next to clear water. Though I used average values, maybe they were too much for this particular image. I am including a crop of the wave from the original (No sharpening). Do you think that looks fine? Thanks again for your helpful comment Roger.

I would like to have seen the other version, too. Just for comparison... (I looked but couldn't find it.) This is fine in terms of contrast, range of tones, and composition. Really super. But the texture of the water doesn't look quite right to me. I wonder if it's been a bit over sharpened? Water is SO difficult...

Beautiful b&w silhouettes, Lily. Great use of the curved line of the surf, once again, to help lead the eye on an exploration of the whole image.

I love the fantastic sky and clouds, which add so much to the mood.

Nice tension in this shot. It looks like the surfers are getting ready to go in...

I think you deserve all the comments you received on this photo and I, for one, put it among my favorites.
Thank you for your kind comment on my "Goodbye friend, hello stranger." No wonder your laptop overheated. My old computer was, in fact, a converted laptop.
Best regards,
Rafi

Fantastic shot, Lily!! I especially love how the softness of the clouds contrasts with the texture of the waves and beach. The perfect scene for the 2 surfers...very nice!!

Wow, Lily. What a wonderful photograph. The composition and the technical details are all together unbeatable. Well worth any award. I specially like how you have shifted the foreground in exchange to the sky, but still leaving the sky as the eye catcher. Excellent!

I love this Lily... the toning gives a real feel of late afternoon warmth to the scene, and generates a feel which I am sure we can all identify with - that of the the glow that comes from the the end of a really good summers day out in the warmth. Great shot - the composition of the surfers is bang on. Well done indeed! Easily good enough for another award imho!

Hi Lily,they say that every picture tells a story, and if you get it right there is no further need to go into a description. I didn't see the first one so can only look in awe at the final culmination.The huge foreground, with the sun reflected as if from a million diamonds, is like a giant launching pad for the eye, and projects the observer into the photo and leads you to the dramatic cloud scene.I like the way the two surfers are presented, so casual, as if by accident, but playing such a vital part in the theme of the composition. If they had been placed closer to the camera, with more body detail, then the composition would have collapsed, and we would have been left with just a couple of guys surfing.The texture of the beach is perfect and breaks up the plainess of the sand. Top honours for a top photo.
