Stylistically this is very cinematic. a light special on his face with that old working Irish hard life look. Glad you wore him down to let you take this. Those steel blue eyes really pull me in. especially the droopy one which shows its sign of age. truely beautiful work. take care JC

Hi, Sandy, thanks for your comment on my Mata Palo shot, and mostly because clicking on your name has brought me to a fascinating portfolio. i love this shot but agree that a grayscale conversion with duotone would be in order. i saw the b&w that Michael did down below and the soft focus and muted tones of your shot plus the one bright eye (i love that detail so much, by the way) have a pure affinity for b&w. Besides, in b&w you can play with tones a LOT. Color doesn't give you quite the same leeway, in my opinion. Best regards: kat~

You found another great character! The lighting is really beautiful (much better than the second version, I agree with you that that one is too light). It seems that the focus is a bit off - did you use autofocus?

Hi Sandy, your comments to me mean so much, thank you from the bottom of my heart! I am so honoured you feel that way. I needed a boost of confidence as I messed up a family shoot I took on 2 different days! It was horrendous, and I think I'm taking that kind of photography off my 'to do' list! ;)
This portrait is fully of character...you can see he is one too! His eyes are quite riveting and I like the darkness behind him. Great capture Sandy.

The way in which you've transformed the original to arrive here is impressive, a good result perhaps showing your Polish influences? ;-) This one is oozing with character. But I don't think the blurred focus helps really - the lighting (on its own) should be suggesting the softness rather than the focus in this photo. At least have a bit more control of DOF directly evident. I also agree that the eye is just a little too bright. With two big "wow" photos in a row now, the pressure's really on for a third straight winner before the weekend... (he said, cheekily curling his tongue) ;)

Sandy,
I like the slight blur and the unusual lighting and how it emphasizes his right eye. At first, I thought you mistitled it since this is a man and that eye seems to be the kind of eye you would see in a seer. Then I read what you wrote and found the humor in the title. Your work is definitely multi-layered and worthy of a person's consideration and not just a tossed out "great shot."
Mary
I like how he emerges from the darkness...

Great character shot! If you converted it to a duotone, I think the lack of focus (if, in fact, the original wasn't in sharp focus) is less noticeable (see example below). BTW, I did yank that shot I posted of me holding the camera. Sometimes shots I post late at night don't look so good to me the next morning.. Warm regards..:)

The part of the image that haunts/bothers me is that one eye has a catch light and the other does not. On the one hand it bothers me that its missing while at the same time one could argue that it presages light going out altogether. Good work keep shooting. -J

Where do u find these people Sandra? All your characters seem to come out from a book or something.
Awesome capture. I wish the focus was a little sharper and more details.
It's going to be hard topping your previous pic...

he had mentioned to me that he was more tired than he used to be those long walks down the corridor would help his blood move good into his legs and through his heart.
once in a while when she isn't looking he sneaks out back to have a smoke.. i am sure he thinks he's getting away with something...
