i love trees, Alan, so i was drawn to this immediately. What gorgeously muted texextures and tones you have here, and right now muted tones and textures are so soothing for my hyper-contrasted-Nikon-burned-eyeballs..this is like a cool oasis of calm next to what i'm working with..as far as not seeing the full tree..here is what i think about that. i shoot trees a lot and what i have discovered is that it's all about balance. If your comp is balanced without the whole tree then it works (i know, duh!). It often depends on the movement of the branches and the leaves and the twist of the trunk. It also depends on which way the grasses are blowing (if there is grass) and as here, the other elements of the image have to balance what is cropped off the tree. You did wonderful work here, as everyone has already said..thanks for your sympathy regarding my Nikon contrast dilemmas...this is my second CoolPix5700. i solved the problem on my first one by changing the default settings but on this one, it's not working out as well. regards: kat~

Maybe at another time, when the sun was high and bright, I would want to see the whole tree. But this is clearly as much about the "scape" is it is about the "tree" and your framing is perfect -- as is everything else about the remarkably peaceful and relaxing scene. --Jim

Alan,
I would say everything is perfect with this landscape. Good decission on including only part of the tree. I think the whole tree would have included too much of the sky and taken away from the images visual appeal.
