About At the same time I was photographing my "magic sky" on the island "Ameland" (I took about 30 shots then)there was a seagull flying over. I followed him with my camera, he was hard to catch. He circled above me as if he was showing me the way into the light. Fascinating... how I wished I could fly! This is one of the best shots of this serie. Enjoy and leave me your comments please.

Excellent capture!!

Great use of the lighting/background to create the perfect setting for the seagull...

It's the subject quality that we often see on greeting cards..

For the reply:
"_ the answer, my friend,

the answer is blowing in Your mind!"

"Behind you, just close"!
(Can't you feel my feathers?)

I'm flying among your pictures, still with Neil Diamond's music soundtrack "Jonathan Livingstone Seagull" in my mind...

Simply listening to Neil Diamond's "Jonathan Livingston seagull". That's it!
En français: _ Ton talent plane sur ta sensibilité artistique, et te porte aux hauteurs de notre émerveillement... (your talent glides on your artistic sensitivity while bringing you up to the heights of our wonder...)
Very difficult picture when one has to consider manual white balance to respect the subtle hues of the sky, speed control and compensation of inherent highlights (by +1 or +2 exposure menu setting) in order to keep the flying seagull visible. Therefore, I disagree with Ken Krishnan and say you did the right (instinctive?) choice. Well done Diana ...(as usual!). Tendres amitiés. Charles

Daniel McIntyre   {K:772} 2/16/2004
This is amazing...If I had tried to take this, the highlights would have been blasted to...well, you know where. You did a great job. The light streaming through the clouds makes the seagull stand out even more.

Hello Diana, what can i say? I've just spent e few minutes (more than a few actually) admiring your portfolio. You have so many really nice shots. A lot of them i could imagine trying to capture myself, but then i ask myself the question would they be as nice as yours? This one of the seagull is one of my favourites. Thanks for sharing it with us. Thanks also for your comment on "Catching the light" - it's encouraging for me! Regards from Switzerland - Neil

Very good composition Diana. Good capture. The outline of the bird is sharp, no motion effect, no bleary. Very good job!

  0

Todd Broadbent   {K:2204} 8/27/2003
Nice catch. Persistance and lots of film pay off. I looked at Ken's edit and I like the more dramatic contrast of dark clouds and lighter sunbeams, but I agree with you; the bird loses a lot of detail and the clouds are a little too dark. Perhaps if you were to isolate the bird as is and burn the clouds just a touch. Of course we all have our artistic preferences and I think the photo is beautiful as is. regards --Todd

I like this picture of many reasons. First it's a brilliant shot - must be very difficult to get this good. Second - this could have been taken everywhere in this world, seagulls and sky: universal. :-)))

Sweet serenity and light. A beautiful image, masterfully executed.
PS
In response to your comments to me:
I greatly appreciate your time and effort for it tells me that you like my image.
I almost did some adjusts to the red because I felt some might not understand that the brilliance seen is real. Our Florida sun, even on an overcast day, just makes color glow intensely.
And to be painfully honest and I mean not disrespect to you or your opinions the intensity of the red drives the emotion of the image for me.
Thanks ever so much for you visit and your skillful advice.
Barb :)

Hello Ken, thank you for your nice comments and for the effort you took to do some editing on my photo. I have done this myself but had a lot of quality-lost on the colours of the bird. Maybe the rays come out much more spectacular by adding some more contrast (exposure) but at the same time there is a lost of the transparancy of them. Anyway, I decided to leave the photo as it was, no editing at all; for me this was just the image I had in my head when I saw it for the first time. Maybe it is a good idea to discuss this with others, I would like to know what their opinion is... editing or not?????

Hi Don, yes I have tried to edit on the contrast but the I loosed that soft brightning of the sun-rays. Well it was just the atmosphere as it was, so I decided not to do any editing at all, just cropping a bit for the right composition.
