About This red haired girl didn't notice I was taken her picture ; she was busy making a cigarette, sitting in the sun. Then she looked up, saw me and began to blush and with a little shy smile on her face she worked on.

Superb portrait shot! I wish you can give it another try in B&W tone to eliminate all other effects and leave the drama only but I do understand the red hair perspective. Cheers BIG 7.

Diana:
I saw all your Portfolio anf I think is really splendid.
I choose this one, with the spontaneous mood of the girl and her cunning way to make a cigarette, sitting in the sun.
Beautiful. Seems to be a folk paint out of time.
Regards to you,
Ez.

"Très bon jeu de couleurs
qui dansent tout autour,
où les tons qui s'opposent
forment un' symphonie
qui encadre à ravir
cet épatant portrait"

I liked the musicality of this French 6 foot free-verse sonnet) inspired by this well accomplished picture of "ginger girl". (Let's just hope that the optional Google translator won't take out of its meaning too much).

Otherwise, here is my translation (this way, one can compare!) :
Good set of colors
dansing all around
where opposing tones
create a symphony
delighfully framing
this exquisite portrait.

How's that ?

Bisous. BBB

Great job.

Well you certainly have garnished enough comments and well-deserved praise for this one, but let me add to the chorus and congratulate you on a beautiful candid portrait. I agree, it has a Vermeerish quality to it, and the soft background tones are absolutely beautiful, with your perfect DOF. Well done!

Diana... Just taking a moment to peruse your portfolio... Lots of good work to choose from, but this really stood out. Excellent depth; the colors of the background reinforce the subject as well.

I like this a lot. The DOF and background colours are indeed just right.
I also think of Holland when I see the orange piece of paper. I saw you were Dutch so perhaps that makes sense.
Her concentration and awareness is a great bonus to your fine image.

Excellent "Candid" photo. I think this is a typical dutch girl. I've never been to Holland but I met many dutch people in Aruba, where I lived and worked for a year. Regards, Hugo.

Hello Diana, VERY GOOD photo. Very good tones. But this girl may have Lupus. She should see a doctor. The red color on her face and ear is a mark of that disease.

I am struck by the consistent clarity of colors in this photo and everything in your portfolio. Maybe it is a consequence of your being a painter. A pleasure to browse through your stuff.

I like how you commented on the Passion Flower as well and thanks for comments on my Strolling Musician. I like your whole site, wish your web site was in English. We have lots in common from what I could see. I would love to see some of your paintings (on the web) and will email you shortly. Steve Toronto

The muted tones are especially nice in this application. The subject's obvious awareness of the photographer adds charm. The background is really soft and serves to make the subject appear very sharp.

Diana Cornelissen   {K:26437} 7/7/2003
Hello Mary,
Yes, you are right. I myself had to think about Vermeer when I took this picture. In his work you don't see "eyecontact" very often. It is typical Vermeer making portraits of people doing something with their hands, looking at the things they do, working with concentration, the thoughts they have are hidden for the watcher ... so he can add his own thoughts and feelings to a picture. Thanks for your good obeserved comment! Here is one of Vermeer's paintings: the milkmaid, I think his famoust one.

MaryBell    {K:32791} 7/7/2003
Diana,

I am not sure what it is but this reminds me a bit of a modern Vermeer. Perhaps it is because in Vermeer's intimate portraits we seldom make eye contact - they are nearly always absorbed in something else. Yet the are not candid they are intimate portraits.

Of course, it could be the tones too...

Mary
