Thanks a lot for the word, AJ! A rod it is, not a pole! Thank you very much for that!

You are right! The fishing rod does exactly what you described! I cloned it off and the image really lost much. What a good thing it was then to not only have it on image, but to also have it so clearly visible with good contrast to the background!

So, yet another thing for me to know! A main subject in the center of the image can be visually "shifted" by the the presence of some additional object, ey? I really have to try that out!

Cheers!

AJ Miller AJ Miller   {K:49168} 3/22/2008
Thanks Nick - an excellent analysis. The fishing thingy is a fishing rod. Another thing I would add about the fishing rod - if it wasn't there, the fact that the man is bang in the centre would, I think, seriously detract from the image.

Nick Karagiaouroglou Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:127263} 3/22/2008
And photographing, that is! A very good capture with clearest constours of the man as a black silhouette against the background. The inclusion of the fishing thingie (what is its name? Fishing pole?) makes things very tangible. Without it it would be a man who just stands there and it would be already a good image. But including that the atmosphere of that lazy waiting gets so clear!

An example for a relative simple but very very efficient layout. Especially the well separated sea and sky right behind add much interest with their different light/tonality. And since the world behind him is immediately recognizable but very diffuse, it stands in a very good contrast to him.

This image would be very good for some novell of the sea!

Cheers!

Hey AJ,

I like the leisurely feel in this image, it really sets the mood. The subtle haze and the fine details also add. I like this photo. Very well captured.

No, no, no, no! Don't misunderstand. I checked and could find NO issues. "I" would have shot it with the smaller aperture . . . which would likely have been a mistake. YOU didn't and it was a better choice. Don't assume because "I" would have done it differently that I think it would have been better . . . that wasn't my point! I was only mentioning that while "I" might have done it differently YOU did it correct. Incidentally, this is why you don't see a lot of smoking fishermen with hats shot in silhouette in my portfolio . . . but I just MIGHT copy the settings and shoot for it! :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

AJ Miller AJ Miller   {K:49168} 2/23/2008
Many thanks for your comment, Doyle. More depth? Well, I certainly had scope to use a smaller aperture, but I'm not sure that more depth would help this shot - if the background was sharper, would it not risk detracting from the main subject? Please tell me more! With the ISO set as low as it would go, I think I would still use F8 or F11 if I were to shoot this again.

I took a close and serious look and couldn't find any technical flaws John . . . intriguing choice for aperture, I would have been more prone to shoot for a bit more depth but given the light and contrast that might not have been an option. It came out well anyway, as I mentioned. You certainly waited for the right moment . . . your silhouetted model almost seems to be posing for you. Impressive! :)
