Thanks Elisa . . . particularly for spending some time on this. Your possible crop was a left-side one I hope? It does seem to eliminate some negative space without fouling the composition. I appreciate that.

Thanks Laphael! This, though, is NO parrot . . . merely a finch about 3 or 4 inches long! Thanks for commenting though!! :)

Thanks Hanggan. In the bird world the beautiful colors belong to the males. In our world, lucky for us, the beauty goes to the females! This proud male has produced offspring before and is a mature male. Thanks for the comments!

Michele: The DOF (which is controlled mostly by the aperture setting) is what causes the softening you mention toward the lower portion of the bird. Thanks for commenting about it . . . I had set it so that only a very narrow range would be in focus and there would, therefore, be no need to use PS blurring . . . which I find can be helpful on occasion but unreliable. Much better to get the camera to do the work.
No problem with the mind "Wandering" as long as it doesn't wander off too far!! Hehehehee! ;)

Hi Doyle, good idea to shot with little depth of field, the green out of focus do not disturb and driving the look to the red one, great colors... Compliments I hope that you succeed to understand that one I want to say
Ciao Maurizio

Beautiful + colorful bird... Nicely composed and also enjoyed the less sharpness /detail towards the bottom half . . . just seemed right. The total 'eye-ball ' view was very sharp and I liked the way you slowly softened the feathers towards the bottom... Makes for a very nice picture. She/he has a VERY sharp beak .... that is enough to see at once. No wonder Marlyce mentioned something about over 400+ animals . I was kinda wondering what the heck was happening there ! Just kidding but honestly 'you' know my mind waunders a lot. Great shot ! Michele~

Oh Shirley . . . it's my wife's dream right there! Out of trouble and in touch with nature . . . not waking to the sound of the neighbor's Harley firing up at 5:00 am. (Figuratively . . . up at 4:00 am anyway!) We have cats, dogs, birds, lizards, turtles, guinea pigs, Holland Lop Bunnies and whatever else she got - :) She wants the goats, sheep and cows . . . perhaps a horse or two . . . but I'm thinking it'll have to wait till we move . . . I mean this isn't Montana . . . it's Los Angeles!!

Sounds like my life growing up...my parents raised all kinds of animals and birds, too.:) We were the first in this area (when I was very small) to have Siamese cats...people still thought they were like Siamese twins.:) Mom was the first west of the Rockies to have Belgian Sheepdogs...and so on. When we lived on an acreage, we had rabbits, goats, cows, horses, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, a pig, sheep...kept us kids busy and out of trouble!:)))

Shirley: We have many aviaries. We breed and sell hundreds of birds, everything from finches to amazons . . . it's something I learned how to build by necessity. While my wife and I both have other jobs . . . we own our own business too - breeding and selling birds wholesale. Thanks for the comments . . . You'll find a variety of animals including my dogs throughout my portfolio.

Thanks Ellen . . . I shot this with a view to the minimal depth of field project. There was an earlier shot of another one taken some time ago and posted here:
http://www.usefilm.com/image/1078671.html
Sharpening is the wrong term here . . . since it wasn't involved in either shot . . . what you were referring to is the DOF . . . and the wider depth of field would have more of the image in focus. I think the above link will give you a great idea of what these guys look like overall! Thanks for the comment!!
