Hi Ian, Too true, you just have to run into this; in a way, that is, IMO also one of the assets of such an image. In that light, the passage you quote is very appropriate indeed; it's not so much as achieving th goals, but undertaing the quest; IMO, it also summarises th quest for each photographer, looking for that singel moment of perfection, and the experiences gained during that quest, without never being able to find that perfect moment. Excellent way of putting it - thanks, mate!

Hi Bruce, Interesting, I never seriously considered the other photo, untill a few people mentioned it. I've been toying with this image, and the bird is gone - already much better, IMO. I also tended to the noise, but even in it's current state, the print doesn't look that bad either. I still have to make a print of the denoised version, so I can't compare the two yet.

Superb Hugo. I love the way you have caught the formation and the rainbow. The lighting is wonderful and the colours are gorgeous so very well done to you. I note what others have said regarding noise, they should see the mess I made of my recent holiday shots.....I had re-set my ISO to four figures for late evening photography and forgot to reset to my norm......ouch! Hey Hugo about this. I thought if someone wanted to achieve something like this they couldn't think of it. The atmospherics are great. After seeing this tonight I was reading a short story by Borges. In it he (inaccurately) summarises a very old suffi poem by Farid ud-din. It made me think of this.
"The faraway king of the birds, the Simurg, drops an exquisite feather in the middle of China; weary of their ancient anarchy, the birds determine to find it. They know that their king's name means "Thirty Birds"; they know that his royal palace stands on the Kaf, the circular mountain which surrounds the earth. They undertake the almost infinite adventure. They fly over seven valleys, or seven seas; the next-to-the-last one is called Vertigo; the last, Annihilation. Interesting comments on this one Hugo, personally I prefer this one to the one with the horizon, its a bit more surreal and of course has the rainbow which adds to the surreality (is that a word?) of the image. I do agree that the little bird should go, but I don't mind the noise particularly at this size - it might look worse when printed however so there is probably a case for reducing it for printing. Great series once again Hugo

A wonderful image, Hugo...both this one and the one with the horizon and no rainbow. I love the sense of movement in the one with the horizon, and the beautiful hues; yet I also love the spacious sense of freedom and mystical feeling of the one with the rainbow.
What can I say...I'll take one print of each, please.

Is there a thread in the forum re noise reduction, I skimmed through but didn't find one, otherwise I would talk about it there.
I use Paint Shop Pro8, I started with it and stuck with it, I haven't used any PShop so not sure what and if it relates. It depends on the type of noise for choice of tool or method, but for the more orange peel texture noise, some of the noise reduction tools tend to exasperate it.
- On this picture I didn't use layers but used the selection tool. Using Magic Wand with 'Tolerance' set at about'30-40,'Feather' set at'0'and 'Match mode' set to 'color' click on areas of sky(it may take many) until most of sky has been captured. Remaining areas can be captured using 'Freehand Selection'.
- Go to 'Adjust'...'Add/Reduce Noise'...'Edge Preserving Smooth...' and set 'Amount of smoothing:' to '1'.
- Go to 'Adjust'...'Blur'...'Gaussian Blur' and set 'Radius:' to '1'.
Those are close to all the steps I used and just requires a little playing around with. Gaussian blur is particulary effective at reducing artifacts and banding problems sometimes resulting from level adjustments that Noise Reduction won't eliminate.
(also sometimes cleaning my glasses reduces the noise)

oh... don't worry about noise Hugo... as we both agree, it is to be expected and i too don't know how to get rid of it when it happens... should you find the way (given that is an easy one because me and technology are not on friendly terms  ) please tell me as well... a useful thing to know....
as to the cropping of the pic, I just think that the image leaves me a bit disoriented... fell more comfy when looking at the attached image but yea, I have to agree that the originally uploaded version is more dramatic due to its surrealism...
but as you well pinpointed, my "thing" is about the image's ability to delve deeper into a more conceptual level... of course when someone look at a pic, there are various reasons apart the pic itself that may form an opinion... such as the mood at the time for instance... the special "something" I was referring to is the option the previous image gave me to go deeper than its beauty at first glance... something that I feel it lacks here… not that I don’t appreciate such nice pics – I honestly do – but just by looking at the other one I had my heart beating a bit faster and various thoughts came in at once… I don’t know if that happens to other people but it did gave me some mind-food to chew on… the stark difference in light and the irony of the whole scene was something I really liked… the sky and sea as I have commented earlier do look threatening in their dark shades as opposed to the power plant which is bathed in golden sunlight… and how did we come to this, to feel threatened by nature whereas the fumes emitted by the plant are the threatening ones… how comes our eyes feel at ease with the immense mass of the industrial site and not with the vastness of the surroundings…like humans are trying to make their presence know “we are here too”… and the contrast is so apparent and ironic… that is maybe the reason why most show such disregard at the environment… and still I admire the fact that humans were able to overcome many difficulties in making such a construction… I don’t know if it makes any sense… the random thoughts that come and go and I try to put them in one comment as simply and as contently as I can… that was the special “something” I was referring… thinking beyond admiring… freedom to interpret what I see in my head and relate to it personally for reasons beyond the original creator ‘s intentions… probably… probably you though about these too… or not… it doesn’t matter… the point is that is found something to excite me… and I enjoyed it immensely… cheers…

This is an interesting challenge, Hugo, but I have just started working with layers and the answer may be there. I think in some cases it is easier than masking, which I have not done for a long time.
Try this. If you make a duplicate layer, use medium on the "background copy" for the sky. Then use the eraser on the same layer for each bird and they will all come through in the original sharpness from the "background" layer.
If you are not confident in using the eraser by itself select the area to be erased with the wand.
When you find the right combination, flatten the image.
Have fun.

Just tried the Noise > Median filter on this image, but it affects the birds too much; Works nicely though, but it would require some masking. How would you preserve what ever natural look is still left? I would really appreciate some help, I'm still struggling with reducing the noise...

Yeah, a quick finger, and a lot of luck.... Eventhough the noise is expected, I'd like to get rid of it, but I haven't managed in finding the right way to go about that.
As to the level of expectations, I think that's a very interesting point; I realise this looks rather surreal, and quite franky, the whole scene was. But I only cropped the left and right of the photo, and deliberately excluded the horizon; the birds were pretty close - 105mm focal lenght only...
A few minutes later, a second flock took off, and I took the photo I also attached to Mary Sue's comment; it shows the horizon (or actually a dyke) But in panning (it was a different direction, so the shutterspeed is considerably lower, hence the motion blur due to the panning)
I actually appreciate the feedback on the concept level; as I try to compose triptyches, uploaded as "stand alone" photos, I'd value those comments a lot.
Tastes may differ, and luckily they do. I haven't made up my mind which one I like better, and they're very difficult to compare anyway. Would you mind explaining what that "special something" in the previous one is?

I always struggle with reducing the noise, and haven't found a good method to go about that.... I'd appreciate to hear how you did that...

The noise does not bother me in this beautiful shot. But, if it were I, I would compulsively have to look at it with the noise/median filter to see if the sky smoothed out without taking away from the birds.
I love the freedom of flight against the natural phenomenon.

Hmmm. Intersting though about the strenght of the image.without the rainbow. I see what you mean, and yes, it does make sense. (Not sure if I agree, though)
As to the ground (and a photo without rainbow, as I took this in a slightly different directon - again) I've attached an alternative, up to you to decide. The initial image was only cropped on the sides, it's a full frame top to bottom.
I never actually paid much attention to the little bird (a Pheasant, I believe) in the distance, but as more people commented on that, I believe it is a distraction. It does look much better with it gone.
Thanks for nitpicking! The only way to improve, and as usual, you've been a great help; I always enjoy reading your thoughts....

It's more the quick fingers than my timing; couldn't control the combination of the flock of ducks taking off and the rainbow in the scene. Guess I got lucky here...:)
I guess I misread Piero's comment, and to be honest, I actually didn't notice (or better pay attention to) the small bird (on closer inspection, I think its a Pheasant)
The noise is, given the 400 ISO not too surprising, I believe. This type of lighting always seems to be difficult; it seems brighter than it actually is, and the camera measures it differently - thank god for RAW files, I had to adjust the exposure quite a bit, if I rememver correctly.

one certainly needs a quick fingy to capture this scene... and by all means its a beautiful image... the rainbow, the flock of ducks (even the noise is to be expected at such conditions)... everything works to create a nice end result but... i don't know... such a close up somehow looks a bit abnormal... not what the human eye would see... maybe a wider perspective to include more elements of the rest of the scenery might make it more realistic... even though i know its not a photomontage it still gives a sense of a staged pic... and impo makes it weaker than the previous shot... i know you might not wanted to elaborate more on the concept level and simply show a beauty but yes, the previous one had that special "something" more... or maybe its simply me :)

A very uplifting(really, no pun intended)shot. The two elements here together- birds in flight and rainbow- are strong universal symbols of freedom,peace,tranquility, and make a very strong impact. The light forming the rainbow highlights the birds with a wonderful warm glow.
I feel that the noise present detracts considerably from the image. To me the freshness of a rainbow and lightness of birds in flight is at odds with noise present. I did a quick noise reduction for comparison(sorry,I also shot the odd bird out of the sky).

Weer een mooi plaatje.. Ik zit me alleen af te vragen wat dat dingetje rechts boven in is (net boven de hoogste horizontale vogellijn..)
Het lijkt niet op een eend.. Intrigerend..;)

Wow Hugo, beautiful colours again, sure must go to Zeeland in a while. The colours of the sun reflects beautifully on those ducks. (Amsterdam people call them "drijfsijsies", I like that, especially when it's said by a born "Amsterdammer".)
Looks very natural to me.

oh.. wooww the ducks flight on the air, and is in the rainbow .. fine, fne and nicely effect hugo.. in your last shot have a particular effect of film, it seem the saturation, the grainy effect.. is so nice!!!

Hugo, this is indeed beautiful and it is my favorite of the three "Licht" photos you have posted. The rainbow is a bit serendipitous! Even though it is very beautiful, I wonder if the image would have been stronger without the rainbow. There are two strong elements here, the rainbow and the flock of ducks. To me, the ducks alone would have been just as strong because of their position within the frame (still on a diagonal) and that gorgeous light. Does that make sense?
I also wish that the ground was visible, even a sliver. That would help me orient my view...is this a crop of a distant view, is this close by...I can't tell where this all fits into the larger schema. I secretly wish that these ducks are flying low over a scenic lake, but I'll let that be my little dream.
Finally, I am with the others (if I'm interpreting the previous comments correctly) that the little tiny distant duck needs to go.
And with all my nitpicking, I want to add that this image really rocks. You did a great job, as usual!!

Excellent timing and a great composition Hugo. Quuick eyes and fingers needed for this. The small bird in the middle of the duck flock is interesting although it seems a bit out of place (hence Piero's suggestion to clone it out?). In spite of the high noise levels (surprising, although somewhat expected at such low light levels) this is a beautiful addition to the series with the empahsis on low light. Great work.

Hi Piero, I'm not sure I understood you completely, but I didn't clone anything; this image is almost as shot, only cropped, and I did play with the levels a bit. That could've caused the noise, I think.

Hi Riny, Er is wel wat noise, maar niet zoveel (hoewel dat dan ook wel weer aan mijn scherm kan liggen. Het effect zal wel wat versterkt worden door de level-tweak die ik heb uitgevoerd...

A special event,
a big luck for such a skifully photographer to can share this beautiful moment with many viewers via his camera.
Angle and exposure is perfect Hugo. some kind of square composition with the diagonal rainbow makes it harmonic and joyfull.
reflections on the wings have added a painterly effect to this shot.
