I am partial to this picture and no just because I love Owls, great job, I like how you have the branch on the right side of the frame so it makes the sky seem bigger and the flight of the female owl much higher than if the branch was on the left side.
All the best,

Patrick

Great capture Dave. Owls are cool birds that we don't see much of here in California. Thanks for the comments on the sea gull

It's a little bit blurry, but when I resized it to a medium image size, it looked better. (It fit better on my screen also). The owl looks cool with its wings spread open with the blue sky behind.

Alyssa! :)

Dave this is awonderfull action shot of the Owl,
in flight, but it could have ben better in the way of the out line around the wings.Maybe the the smaller file siz had some thing to do with it as
happens to me some times Dave,it is the capture that counts Dave cheers....Bob.

Great daytime capture Dave and I am sure this has to be a most difficult subject to take. Great details, love the tree poking out of the corner and what a superb rich blue sky. Well done to you my friend, all the best....Ray

Great capture, Dave! You managed to get the owl in flight, amazing contrast with the blue sky! I am yet to do an owl shot, never been so lucky to see one yet. They used to come to a place near Kingston last year, but I didn't go, apparently there were dozens of owls in full daylight - and just as many photographers, but the owls didn't seem scared as long as you didn't get too close.
Amazing creature and wonderful shot! Best regards, Ina

Oh my goodness Dave, this is incredible! Beautiful colors and what an expression on him! He looks like she's smiling at you! Gorgeous detail, I wish you'd send her my way! The geese pic of mine is from Bosque 2004. My hubby had back surgery so I'm revisiting some of my old images and having a good time doing it! The grandkids are doing great, they just grow too fast! Krystal is doing great! Hope all is well there with you and yours my friend! And don't forget to send this beauty to Louisiana! Darlene

Oh Bless... I do love owls & this snowy owl is beautiful.

A shame it is not as clear & sharp as one would like, however points go on catching it mid flight (& in daylight) (I tend to miss the bird and get a nice capture of blue sky or some clouds... lol)

It is hard to focus when your trying quickly to capture the shot. Well done. Sue xx

Keeping away the quality of the image, certainly taking a crop from a larger image will effect on the final result, this crop request minimum of 8-12 m pixel to be in good condition, though it is very interesting in the finding of such a rare capture.
Fabulous work.

A great capture of what seems to be not an easy task, Dave. The pose of this beautiful bird shows something of the scare it distributes under the mice and rabbits. The tree gives a hint of the scale. Congratulations!

Hi Dave,
I thought that's what might have been the case. (small section of the image blown up)
Marcus Armani gave me a few invaluable tips for shooting birds in action. It always sounds easy in theory :)
When you see a bird at a distance, perched, set up the camera well in advance. Multiple frames, and telephoto on.
Focus on the bird and start advancing slowly towards the bird with your finger on the shutter. Get as close as you can and when the bird starts to get fidgity, start shooting and pan when it takes off. I think Marcus has it down to a fine art.
Andre

Dave Stacey Dave Stacey   {K:150877} 2/25/2006
Hi Andre, thanks for your comment, as well! Yes, it is a crop from a larger shot, and that definitely affected the quality. The camera was on the 6mp setting, which I've found gives a little better quality than the 3mp, and it was still in the optical zoom range. In fact I wasn't zoomed as much as usual, anticipating the bird taking off, and I wanted to be sure to catch it. In the past with the full optical zoom I've missed action shots like this because of having too tight a crop.
Dave.

Great action shot. You caught the wings just right. What a beautiful bird. It is not easy to capture a bird in flight with such clarity. Del.

Andre Denis Andre Denis   {K:66407} 2/25/2006
Hi Dave, The quality is off a little on this one as Riny says, but still worth a post if only for the pose you caught it in.
The little Fuji is an okay camera, but it definitely leaves something to be desired when it comes to being compared to some of the shot in here taken with 600mm telephotos on Nikon and Canon DSLRs.
I always try to stay away from the digital area of the zoom lens and stick to the optical area. I usually keep mine set at 3mp as well.
Was this one blown up afterwards? That could account for some of the quality loss. It almost looks like a small area of the image blown up.
Andre

You are certainly fortunate to get this shot, Dave. I'm similarily frustrated when there is never enough telephoto.

Hi Vandy, thanks for the comment! The snowy owl's wingspan varies from about 1.4-1.7 metres, with the females being larger. As Todd pointed out, this may be an immature bird of either sex, but it was definitely on the larger size.
Dave.

Hi Dave,

I like your composition! These guys are tough to capture in flight. I have a few good pictures of Snowies, but none in flight. :^(

You may be right about it being female, but the heavy barring gives me the impression this is a very young owl. Both males and females are heavily barred when young.

Congratulations!

Todd
