Thanks for your comment Dave. Yeah, you are right, I am grateful that they hold still for long periods. Actually, I got a few shots of another heron today again because of this. The color shift is probably due to the fact that the light is coming from the city (hence mostly tungsten light) and my WB was set to cloudy (and I forgot to correct in postprocessing!).
Wow, 5 sec at f8, those things know how to hold still. I like the shimmering water, causing that unique foreground shadow. I wonder if reciprocity failure caused the shift in color.... I might have tried to delete or crop that dark spot at lower right.
