Sean, I like the range of tones you have very much, but I'm not sure of the composition. It feels very cramped, and I get the impression that the grass is pressed up against something at the top of the frame. The backlight is nice and I like how it brings out the texture around the grains, but the very dark corner in the bottom left of the frame is a little bothersome. All in all, I wish that my first studio work had turned out as well as this...

Yep the lens adds to the comp. Hmm.. maybe just a tad more light. Otherwise this is very well done a bit spooky. Alisa

Cool! Now which moviecover does this remind me of? I can't remember.. Looks sort of alienish, with even more light, you could have made the arms, legs and head even thinner, thus making it even more standard-old-hollywood-invasion-from-mars-scifi-movie-alien -like. (if you see what I mean..) I'm a little curious about how you made this backlightning. But I think it would be better to make the picture outside, instead of inside your house(?). Perhaps with a forest in the far background, and with a little hint of a mothership(you only need a $99999999 budget), behind the glow, and of course this excellent take-me-to-your-leader pose..!
My two cents.

Interresting. Reminds me of a sci-fi movie cover. eliminate the door stop at the bottom. Tighter crop to the right to get rid of the white and blend and smudge more of the glowing white. just a little fine tuning. I like the overall feel.

I think the arrangement of lines and shapes in this photo make it quite interesting. Can't decide if I'd like it better with more DOF or not...hmm...Either way, I think it is frameable.

I really like this one. You seem to have captured a gentle moment between the subject and the dog. His softness adds to that. I like the composition...side view works well for me.

Interesting photo, with a fair deal of noise. I like the nuances in blues and purples, while the light makes it a bit cumbersome. Do you have some info about this photo, and what your intent was ?

Hi Sean,
I've been working with Tri-X for quite some time now and have done quite a bit of sensitometry testing with the film. I've tested Tri-X film to be at ISO 160, with a normal developing time of 6.5 minutes using D-76 1:1 70F. What does this mean? By shoot it at ISO 400, you are underexposing your film by 1.3 stops. Then by developing for 9 - 10 minutes, you're simply making up for the underexposure of your highlights. This is the equivilant of "pushing" your film, which evidently presents a lot of grain. Many people do not realize it, but it is also very important to keep your temperature consistant throughout. If you present the film with even moderate changes in temperature, reticulation occurs, which gives you an increase of grain. From now on, shoot it at ISO 160 and develop it for 6.5 minutes, then work from there to fine tune everything. Good habits will give you good results.

Nice shot! The shutter speed is perfect for that wonderful effect. The tonal range is nice and the composition works with a great lead-in. There does seem to be some artifacts at the left though. Perhaps it's the scanner?

Russ, Thanks alot for the comment. I've never framed any of my photos before... it is just a 5x7 enlargement that I made that is actually sitting inside a notebook with the rest of my photos. Hehe, thanks again, both of you.

Sean, I like it! Textured rock really appeals to me.
There appears to be a "cross-hatching" in the picture. Is it the paper or the scan or my monitor?

Neat image, Sean. Have been wanting to visit Watkins Glen for a while now, and this reinforces the desire. It's moody and romantic, by my way of thinking. And I love the light-traces from the water drops on the right!
My only suggestion would be to tweek the rotation just a touch more (I see that you have once already), so that the water is falling straight down. Use the select tool to check for verticality and then re-crop it. Right now, it seems top-heavy because of the left-lean.
Also, something seems to have gone wrong with the scan or the negative, as the left side is discoloured.
It would be worth a reshoot if you can get there again. Just my $.02.
