Thanks Gary. I thought this was going to be a simple shot. I'd had it in mind a long time in advance. But when I came to shoot it I found all sorts of problems, including of course the contrast of the sky and the buildings. I took many of these over several days and eventually got one or two I was happy with.

Here I was standing on a pedestrian island in the middle of the road, so relatively safe... The only run-in I had with security was at the Empire State Building, where my tripod was confiscated.

Thanks Ray. I think the idea originally came from an image I saw a long time ago here on UF, and I had this one in mind even before stepping onto the plane...

Thanks Ivona. And yes, the original has colours, sunlight and blue sky. But I had a concept in mind of this big "+" or "X" in the sky, and for that it has to be B&W!

A beautiful shot, enhanced by the light in the dust kicked up by the sheep. (Roberto's suggested crop makes it even stronger.)

Those curves in the road are wonderful! Lovely rolling slopes and classic Tuscan trees. (The only slight distraction here is the cables at bottom left.)

Hi Stan. I grew up in Manchester and London, neither of which is noted for its friendliness. I now split my time (when I'm not travelling) between Warsaw, Poland and Tarifa, a small town at the southern tip of Spain. I like this contrast of spending part of my time in a (relatively) big city and part in a more remote location.

A wonderful portrait of this magnificent cat (and she knows it!)

I think the photo would be even stronger with a couple of adjustments: a little straightening and a cropping of the background, both easily done. Ideally I would suggest a shallow DOF to blur the remaining background.

There's so much I like here: the warm tones, the symmetry, the lack of symmetry(!), the lighting... It's the sort of shot I would love to use to insert some of my photos into the frames!

I like the overall softness, but there appear to be a few jagged edges, along the skirting and picture frames for example. Maybe a result of the reduction in quality necessary for uploading to UF?

Many thanks JD. I agree with your comment about partial desat - I think it should be used sparingly in very specific situations...

Excellent colour and detail, especially in the drops. And it all looks great against the dark background.

A lovely portrait. The setting looks quite natural for what I assume is a zoo. And whatever the thoughts on zoos, perhaps this is the only chance of survival for these wonderful animals.

Thanks Stan. This was also my first and only visit. And as you say, a great location. This was taken from the apartment I was staying in and the B&H photography shop is on the next corner down the road to the right! I actually found the place remarkably friendly - perhaps that says something about European cities.

Ray: I would happily put the steps to do this into a short technique article under the UF "Photo articles" if I did not have the feeling that UF was being left to die...

Many thanks, Ray. But in reality this is quick to do: I simply selected the yellow cabs and red letters on the basis of colour, put them in a separate layer and slotted an adjustment layer for the desaturation between the two.

I have to say, I'm finding this difficult to comment upon, Malules! It is certainly minimalist... I suppose it has got me wondering one thing: is it shallow DOF turned through 90 degrees, or is it material draped over a bar or support of some sort? I'm not looking for an answer - I'm just letting you know what I'm thinking. Sorry that my thoughts are technical rather than artistic!

There are three layers: the grass in the foreground, the light trees in the middle and the darker trees behind. A few lighter trees among the dark ones, like supporters of a rival team on the terraces, trying to push their way to their friends at the front. And the main subject: that wonderful old building, perfectly placed. If you had all the individual elements as cutouts on the table, I guess you'd arrange them just like this... A lesson in composition (I don't agree with Luis!)
