Excellent silhouette and color. However, my comment is not on the technical side of the photo, which is very good, but on the artistic side as that crane really distracts from the outline of the buildings (IMHO).

it is the film speed that makes it so grainy.. I tryed to rid it of some of the grain when i scaned it but i couldn't... also i think i should have made it a little brighter..
thanks for the comments

I've rethought (if that is a word) my earlier comment on this photo. Actually the grainy look of it is kind of artistic. I think I like it more than I thought I did. I'm sorry I judged it harshly. I just had to look at it again. Nice work. Is it the film speed that causes this grainy look or is that done someother way?

Hi Ali,
I think this is a nice environmental portrait of the squirrel. Pretty nice. Also, you expressed interest in my Tour of Scotland idea - well, after some months of being hideously busy I have now put a first draft online, so if you're still interested, have a look at www.cyberspace.clara.net/tour/index.htm
Cheers Chris

Wow - I really like the starkness of this image. Too bad the crow's not sharper, but I suppose it couldn't be helped because he caught you off guard. A bit more room on the left would have been nice too.
I hope you try stalking some crows one day, as I would love to see a crow on a fencepost or in flight against a completely white background like you have here.

I have added a border and it has worked well
The sky is the the worst part i think I was wanting a nice day for this shot but they are hard to find in Edinburgh.
If I play aroung in Photo shop I might be able to change it a little.

Ali, this is a good composition.
2 things to point out, however. The scan seems to be a little soft, plus the sky is a bit washed out. I have the same problem sometimes, so I'm hoping to get a ND graduated filter sometime to help overcome this. What would help the appearance of the image on usefilm, would be if you put a darker inner border around it to help the outline stand out a bit. You live in a beautiful part of the UK, so I look forward to seeing more from images from Scotland.
Sarah

On a side note, I looked up the Centon K100, 'cause I'd never heard of it, and I noticed it has a Pentax K mount. GOODY! Look for a Sears brand 135mm f/2.8 Macro lens. In all honesty, it sucks as a macro lens...gets REALLY soft...too soft. BUT, as a portrait lens, it is superb. It's made my Samyang...the same company that makes Vivitar and Phoenix, and even some Tokina lenses. The optics at normal focusing ranges do an excellent job (you have to turn the inner barrel more clicks out to get macro focusing, but, again, don't use that, 'cause it sucks). You can get 'em at pawn shops and such for around $20. If you find one, snag it, but check it first to make sure the aperture works properly, and that the lens elements aren't scratched, chipped, or covered with fungus. I bought one on a whim once, and I fell in love with it. I've bought several since to give to friends who use Pentax cameras, 'cause, again, it's a great portrait lens. Just thought I'd share this with ya, in case you'd like a good portrait lens but don't have much money to spend on it.

The thumbnail of this image caught my eye. Very interesting shapes you've managed to create with the CD's and the lighting. The three CD's at top resemble spotlights, shining down on the central CD. The only concern I have with this picture, and, with this particular subject it's not even that serious, is that the overall focus seems a little soft. Of course, that could also just be the scan and other factors. Other than that, you've produced a very unique and eye-catching image here. The colors are nice and saturated. And isn't Superia print film just the deal? I shoot 800 and 1600 myself. Beautiful color, and surprisingly small film grain. PERFECT for sports photography, should you take interest in that field. Keep 'em coming, Ali!

The only thing i did to this pic was to crop it a little..
I had to move the light ( just a standard house lamp.. you can see it's reflection ) around alot till i got the right amount of glare and adjust the position of the cds .

Was this doctored a bit in PS, or did you just play with the light until you got the right amount of colourful glare? Whatever it was, the outcome is awesome... very dreamlike, but still very real. I think that I wish that the one main CD, top and centre, was off to the right a bit.

I'm not sure if it happens all the time but you do find a few burnt out cars in that area. This was the first time i ever saw it in proccess, luckily I had my camera with me .
I have over 30 shots of the whole event from the car being driven about, being set on fire, to when the firemen turn up.
There are actually people near the car on the right but I didnt get them in in this shot cause i wanted to get the whole of the tower block in the frame, they are in all the other photos i have tho

I love the juxtaposition of images here. What might be an otherwise idyllic setting (it may be an "undesirable" place, but it looks neat, suburban and somewhat pastoral) is marred by a random inferno. What makes the image particularly odd is that it's in the middle of a field (with no visible roads, I might add) and no one's around! Does this sort of thing happen frequently in this area?!
"Oh, ho hum. Dear, there's another car burning in the field again. Please pass the salt."
Anyway, thanks for the chuckle.

Thank you both for your comments.I would have liked to have the water in the center of the picture but unfortunatley i didnt have a tripod i used a wall to rest the camera on and i couldnt move into a better position, at the time i only had 1 lens (this was when i first bought a camera) I'll probably go back and use a wide angle to get all the water and some more of the river, and on a better day It was grey skies at the time.

Nice texture in the falling water. The thing that bothers me most is the white, blown-out triangle at the top right. I'd either not include it or use a polarizer or red filter to tone it down (I am assuming it was a blue sky. It could be cloudy here but I couln't tell.). I wonder if you could get a bit more of a reflection off the flat surface of the water.

I like the water very much, is very silky. Personally I would like to see the water closer to the center of the picture, since there is no other focal point.
I think this composition would be perfect if the water was centered or if there was another subject in the distance (a tree with character, childeren playing, a leaf falling, etc.. ) just my opinion though. Aaron
