The Fetihie Mosque is actually a converted church.
It was dedicated to Virgin Mary as Mother Mary at the Wheat Market (Panayia tis Staragoras). It was indeed converted to a mosque when Mohammed Fatih visited Athens in 1458. If you look from the left hand side of the building, you can see that the front part has been added later. The minaret (tower) is not attached to the main building. You can still see its remains in front and to the right of the building.
By the way, the old Madrassa (Islamic School) is very close to this mosque -oposite the Aeridhes Roman tower- and an excellent subject for nice shots, especially in the afternoon!
