About	Usually out West we do not count the eye guards because the mule deer have small or no eyeguards. A person usually says I got a 4 point muley with eyeguards. Back East they count all the points and whitetail usually have prominent eyeguards or multiple eyeguards.

It must have once been a magnificent animal.

As far as the photograph goes, the night flash makes it grainy and dark in the background, with harsh shadows and overblown foreground white. A second light source, or a daytime image would have helped the lighting. The composition is good, and close cropping makes it an interesting journalism photograph. You might want to crop the dark stripe on the lower left edge.
