a very nice shot this. For some reason it looks like one of Gerry Andersons miniatures. I like the way you played with the scale.

Over time my guess is your PS skills are going to improve. So whether you return to this spot and retake it or revisit the file and revamp it you'll get it to look the way you want. I think this is a good 1st draft for the sky. If you mask it (so as to not overlap the rock formations), adjust the transparency and even create multiple layers of differing colors you might find that the sky becomes a more natural hue. It takes some experimentation and the right combination is waiting to be found. I'll be on the look out for this image if you ever resubmit this with changes to the sky.

Yes Jim you are spot on with your diagnosis of the sky. The actual sky was very bleak and grey with not even any cloud interest so I did just gradiate a blue sky in PS (my best guess). I was going to take a sky from another image and put it into this one but, as you know, I wasn't happy with the quality of this image so I didn't think it was worth the effort. My real only saving grace here was my composition and the awesome area. If nothing else I'm happy with my compositional skills and now am working on my technical skills. I also had a new camera here and had no idea how to use it but am not afriad of trying out all the buttons now. I wish I could go back to all these wonderful places and shoot these all over again knowing what I know now. Oh well...there are new places ahead. :)
Thank you for taking the time to drop by my images and for your comments.
Cheers - Ann :)

The natural framing sets this apart from any image of this area that I've seen. You've aptly recognized that your depth of field could have been greater to get a sharper image from foreground to background. Next time around I doubt you'll make the same mistake. The inclusion of the truck for scale is a very nice touch. It does nothing but add to the image. The trucks location is perfect. It is nicely contrasted against the shaded and darker background. The one thing that stands out to me about this image is the sky. Was a blue gradient added when post processing your image? Something doesn't seem right with the sky, but I can't put my finger on it. In either case my observation of the sky is either the result of having eagle eyes or knowing too much about PS I've made a bad guess... it does nothing to take away from a very impressive image.

I like how you used the formations on the left and right to create a natural frame within the photograph itself. The sky fading to deep blue is spectacular, as are the red monuments. We were there in 1986 if I remember correctly. The color print film has deteriorated badly during the years. Maybe I'll be back there again.

Nicely framed and composed, Ann. You do not need to apologize for your photos, but if you wish to add diversity move in to examine your subjects more closely and explore the textures, colors, and even the meaning of what you are seeing (thou such vistas like Monument Valley call for the panoramic approach).

Hi Ann, It's been a while since last viewing your portfolio. You've really got a great selection of images. These from Monument Valley are special. My wife and I were up near there last month, but didn't end up making it that far east. Your images have convinced me that we need to make another trip... this time through this incredible location.
Best regards and Happy Holidays! Bob

geology gone mad Ann!!
amazing how these lone plinths are still standing - guess in a million years they'll have eroded away like the rest of th valley.
I quite like the SUV in the middle, does give scale as you say. Never realised quite how big they were.... should have guessed they'd be HUGE!
pretty decent all over focus - I had thye 18-55 and you've got to shut it right down to get things crisp - but it will do it :-)

Hi Kathy...I didn't go anywhere. I just took a couple of days off from posting to allow everyone one less image to comment on to catch up and also so I could catch up with comments too. Yes I like the camera but I sure wish I'd waited another month for the next 350 model as it's more compact. Oh well - can't keep up with technology.

What a great view! I think I need to do the valley again with a guide , not the public 15 mile road.. I would have taken the yellow car out, not put him in!! You eye goes right to it... but it does give scale, but not sure you need it? I think, but it could be my monitor, that it's a little to blue and with that correction the greens may be stronger?? I love the image! such a good images is worth tweeking just a little bit.. A real wall hanger!! Don

A majestical scenario my dear Ann. It matters not whether you wait for passing traffic or just get lucky, the effect in providing us with the scale in this wonderful composition is awesome. There is nothing wrong with the details in the foreground and seeing a hazy background is normal and perfectly natural. When I was more able to get out and about I gave haze filters up because I liked the more natural look to a landscape. I think that if things were too clear you might lose the sense of distance and vastness. I think this is an excellent shot and I thank-you for sharing your country's fabulous scenery. Hope you are well and over that nasty interlude. Very best wishes and kisses....Ray

A very nice composition nicely framed with the two cliffs on both sides. This is an amazing place with these huge rocks scattered around. The tiny yellow dot gives a good scale, for guys like me, living in a place where the highest point is only 5 ft from sea level. I like interesting forms of these rocks. Beautiful capture Ann!

Fabulous shot!!! What a great view... love the way you used the rocks to frame your shot!!! Wonderful soft colors... like the blueish haze in the back....!!! But the yellow car... I would've waited 'till it was gone (well that's me... ;-D). I know you did it for 'scale' but by including it you introduced an unnatural element in a stunning natural enviroment.... that's my opinion... Thank god we don't think and do all alike... that would be unbelievably boring and result in only one photo upload a day..... LOL!!!

Ah, one of the places I must visit before the last frame is shot (so to speak)....the two furthest monuments seem almost unreal or like a painted backdrop but I like the effect, overall the lighting seems muted, what time of day did you take this... by the way are you sure that yellow car wasn't on a lily pad once? Since you are in that part of the world are you going to White Sands in New Mexico, I have never seen a bad photo taken there, course I haven't been there yet.

The small yellow car in the photo is perfect for showing the scale of this amazing place.
