thanks for your explanation, stefan. I agree to your critique. I tried to capture the subject a few times, but wasn't never satisfied. the shadow was either to weak, or the shining of the leaf was to strong.

Two things make it appear hard as I see it: the reflected light on the leaf which creates a lot of contrast and the relatively hard light which casts pretty sharp shadows. Softer light would address both aspects. It is probably a very different image and just an alternative I thought could be interesting.

I'm not sure if I understand the meaning of "softer rendition". less sharpness on the leaf or less contrast?
