He stands out beautifully against that cloudless sky, and the textures of the tree are great. Alison

Another good one Darlene . These Woodpeckers live in my area as well , but they are bloody hard to photograph with a 300mm lens . Great capture !

Wonderful! I would love to get a shot like this of our downy woodpeckers in this area. They are cheeky little things. Nice colors and textures. Susie

Good capture Darlene, so much better than any I could get of these hard nosed critters. Any time I got close enough for any kind of shot, they jumped around to the other side. Very handsome bird.

the way you composed this shot is very didactic for me; the shot is divided in two vertical zones, the one occupied by the rich texture of the tree while the other one is a complete sunny day sky; in the latter the blue color is interrupted by the bird body in action; the focus is a bit poor or is lack of sharpness due to camera shakes at those extreme focal lenght you used

Amazing! I've always wondered what these guys looked like in real life ... I remember Woody (that crazy character created by Walter Lantz's ) from early childhood, and never figured out why that bird kept drilling wood (...hence his name). Someone told me (I'm not sure it's true) the bird 'digs' for insects that live in a tree's bark. Anyway, your image is priceless, you made the memorable cartoon real for me ... simply amazing Darlene ...Gab
