Yes this looks like the hair salon that was in a tiny little building near C Ward by memory. As for your earlier comment about where are the patients today, yes they are in the community and I disagree that you feel they don't get the help they really need because they do. I have had the experience of working in Tokanui and now in the community and there is better opportunity in living within that community rather than being out of mind out of sight in an institution such as Tokanui. I find your comments rather short sighted, it's very easy to say that people with mental illness just don't get any help by community based services today. I invite you to visit any community services or Gracelands services and see for yourself.

a beautiful picture this one mark. i looked at it and the first thing i thought was - "who sat here last?" - a tiny bit of normalcy in a disturbed world. this is an excellent series mark - thanks for sharing

Where are they now?
Sadly the can be seen roaming the streets of Hamilton. The idea is to try and intergrate them into the community which maybe good in theory but in practice I don't think they get the help they really need.

Excellent series of images, Mark. The way you have framed, cropped and treated all the images are very thought provoking...which I suppose was the reason for "breaking in" in the first place. The individual images that have the most impact are, like this one, the ones that can relate to the individuals that once stayed there. I wonder where they are now?
