About I cropped out 50% of the square neg and it's still sharp and not grainy. Love medium format!

To CorrieLynn -
I don't scan negatives. I make 8x10 prints, the old fashioned way, in my smelly old darkroom, and scan them. Right now I am using an Epson Perfection 1650 scanner, and I scan them at 150dpi and then shrink them down for web use. I've never made a print from these scans, they are just for uploading.

Very inspiring to see a medium format user! I just got my first mf (pentax 645) and i cant wait to get going.
Do you scan your negatives yourself? Which scanner do you use?
I love your work, especially the portraiture.

Roger - It was a combination of backlighting, PMK Pyro film developer which give strong edge effects, and burning in the background to make the face stand out.

Here is a scan of the original 8x10 print (not the same one I posted a few days ago).

Yes, even at 800 pixels the difference is clear. And of course 1/60th is much more likely to be free of camera shake with a lens shutter... The original of this was a favourite of mine. Knowing you develop and print the traditional way, I wonder how you get the lighter "halo" around the dark garment that makes the subject stand out from the wall behind?
