About Been trying some pictures of racing bikes, however, only 3 or 4 out of 60 worked out decently. Got any tips for future tries?

I really think you did a nice job with this shot. I love the clarity with the motorcycle and rider in comparison to the blur of the scenery. Nice work! Very cool shot!

this one looks close to what you want.
suppose you want biker to be pin sharp and the background blurr.
I am not an expert on shooting bikes, but I do shoot very fast moving aircrafts.
so,suggest longer lens,200 mm or 300 mm ,shutterspeed 1/125 or 1/250.

Great shot. He seems to be looking at you. Have you tried panning the image. It will often get you the better images.

Thankyou so kindly for your wonderful comment on my image, Bjorn.

Hi Bjorn,
I too have just been doing some motorbike racing shots - the first for many years. I was using my long lense (Sigma 50-500) as the action was not very close. I've found that good light is essential to give decent shutter/aperture combinations. As Richard says, try to pick slower corners and get the riders to be approaching you head on. That minimises the effect of the speed too. Fortunately the autofocus on my lens is fast so I didn't have focus problems. Panning at the speeds the bikes travel is incredibly difficult. I tried panning at one of the fastest parts of the circuit (Start/Finish straight at Silverstone) and had maybe a 20% success rate if you ignore the safety fence that was in the way. It is a most difficult subject to photograph but with a lot of practice reasonable results can be obtained. Here's a couple of my shots you may like to see. There are more to come!

hallo Bjorn !!!

Good try Bjorn. Years ago I shot some racing action (motorcycles)with my Pentax ME Super, when I was not racing myself. The best advice I have is to go on practise day, usually the day before the race, and scout out the best locations. You are shooting digital, so you can even do test shots. I had my best success on the slowest corners. I would focus (manually) on the apex of the corner, and let the motor drive do it's work as the bikes approached. I usually shot F/8 or higher with a high shutter speed to stop the action. Panning is a whole different thing. Good luck.
