About On the (very bad) road from S. Roque de Minas to the entrance of the Serra da Canastra National Park, we looked back and saw this typical tree.

I wanted to show the valley below as a backdrop.

PS work to increase the intensity of the sky and Channel Mixer to convert to B&W. I was very tempted to go Duotone again, but preferred the "straight b&w" version.

I have doubts in my mind about the composition, with the tree in the center. I thought about cropping it in half, with a portrait orientation showing only the trees, but in the end decided against it. Something must have attracted me to this particular arrangement at the time of taking, and I didn't want to second-guess myself.

What is your opinion?

James,

The blues are more pure in that section of the sky. The lower part has some thin cloud blocking up the blue and making it a lighter tone, and this has not been so affected by the red filter effect.

Thank you for looking and for your insightful critique!

well, its a photo with few elements and a simple conversion to black and white has done it justice in my opinion. only one question, the upper half of the sky is darker... what happened there? nonetheless, it is very nice ~ james

It is very eyecatching. The gradiation of dark to light is appealing.

Very existentialist picture. The loneliness of the tree in the huge sky is desolating. No leaves, looks like burnt by the sun. The slightly out of centre position of the tree gives a sense of instability that increases the dramatic effect. Nothing to be changed!

Carmem

Hey Thilo,

Thanks for taking the time to look and comment. I can only imagine how many you have to look through right now...

I myself have doubts about the centering. But I have more "likes" than "dislikes" about the image. If nothing else, it has the merit of instigating debate and a wonderful comment by Linda, so rightly rewarded with a feature in the front page.

That's not what I intended, of course, but I am not going to bemoan it. Now I like it the way it is even more! :)

Thanks again!
Angelo.

Hi Angelo,

wow, you have been very productive lately ;-)

This one really shines from the BW conversion. it came out near-B&W-IR-like. the contrasts in the clouds and the dark sky are well done. the centering? hmm... I'm not sure, to be honest. I would just love to NOT see the stuff on the lower right as this partly distracts from the great main subject. My guess is that centering is sometimes very good ;-)

best wishes,

Thilo

The tree looks fine centrally placed although there is a big space on the right hand side.May be it's a pity the tree was not growing a branch on the rh side. Sorry I seem to be getting carried away or maybe I should be. Nice Image Angelo.

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique This is so wonderful, what an eye treat, I just love it...You know Angelo art is very subjective, and sometimes I think rules are just rules and sometimes they need to be broken. I just don't think that we have to always judge a work of art by "the rules"..although I know we all have a tendency to do that..this is a beautiful, lovely image, I love the tones, and this tree is so proud to be there in its surroundings that you so wonderfully captured.. I like it contrasted against the open space, it's like saying this land is mine, and he's so proud of it, and to be a part of it, the lighting speaks well of that...I think when something speaks to you like this, that you have to listen..and I like the way you framed it as well....:):)Linda

looks a bit "central" to me, but then I don't know what was around and if you could frame it better (that's not always possible).

Great image as it is though, really like the sky and clouds.
