How much overlap you need depends on how much distortion there is in the images, Lily... if you use a very wide angle lens to try to reduce the number of stitches, you have to have bigger overlaps! You just can't win... Also, if you have big overlaps and something moves in that area, you get double images--"ghosts." Your vertical panorama is really very well done. I didn't realise you had already done some, just thought you were playing with the idea. Forgive me sounding off about stitching!

You might find a unipod a good compromise. I hate lugging tripods around, but a unipod doubles as a walking stick... I use one with a bubble level velcro'd to it. With your interest in panoramas you might enjoy some of the panoramas in my folder with that title. There aren't that many stitched ones because I really don't like stitching...

Roger, Thanks for your comment. I'm new at stitching. I heard about the software but I think the first hurdle for me is when I'm shooting them handheld. Tripod will probably help but I'd like to shoot them without. Is there a lot of overlap in your panos?... maybe I'm trying to span too much in the next shot. It's also unnerving when the objects in two shots are slightly different sizes. How do you deal with that?
Here's an image where I stitched three shots vertically. See what you think.

Yes, there's a bit of fall-off in the corners. It's when you try to stitch photos like this into a single image that that becomes a serious problem. You also need to be able to force the camera to use the same exposure pointing in the two different directions (difficult, if not impossible, with fully automatic digital cameras). There's software to help you actually make a single image from several shots. The most I've ever combined was 18 (and no, I wouldn't do it again!). Aren't really, REALLY wide shots great! I love them.

What superb colours Lily! I quite like the idea of this too... using 2 images as a single one has worked really well here!!! Very clever....
