About This herd of Heifers were the most inquisitive I'd come across in a while - we (Steve and Andy) had walked across it and the kind of got interested, then the whole lot came up to a fence and started posing for us!

This shot is at 15mm so the lens was about 4 inches from it's nose - I had to pull the camera back before it got licked!

I've put in the Alternative Perspcetive project as it's an alternative view of a cow!

Excellent close up! I have never been able to get this close to a cow before. American cows are a bit more wary of pedestrians I guess. If you get the chance, try to duplicate the famous album cover to Pink Floyd's album: Atom Heart Mother.
Cheers!

Many thanks indeed for the URL Ade ... bare faced cheek if you ask me, you got me good.

And just to tell the masses I was NOT doing anything rude and was in fact playing with the camera lol

Congrats on the POD.

It's amazing to see what gets attention on here Ken, this was probably the least "prepared" shot I've ever posted (as in no filters or manual metering) and it came out trumps!!

going to have to venture back to a few fields and get some more cow shots. Or maybe a pig?

Cheers for the comment, as always

Ade

Cheers Ian,

I agree - getting a grad filter on this shot would hasve been pretty pointless as the cow would have gone by then!!! I used to work on farms and have milked more cows than I've had hot dinners, so never too bothered by them.... but bulls!!! RUN!

that's a cracking shot Roberto - a relly coy kind of pose from the cow. Looks like an Ayrshire or jersey cow?

Yes Ade... the lens gave it another alternate perspective... I like the funny and distorted configuration of the cow's head together with the small feet.
Good work and congrats for the "Photo of the Day", best regards,
Khaled.

Ade,

I look at this one again and cant stop laughing !!!.

YOu are such a sport mate. This one goes very well with your cheerful personlality and should I say with your "constitution like an ox" !.

I m delighted that this one being choosen for POTD image. Wonderful news.

Enjoy the day. There are not many days like this one to come arround. A rare day and well deserved too. Wish you many more to come....

I think Admin should ask you to write an article about using different lenses and their significance. Ho, I forgot, about filters as well.....

regards,
ken.

Priceless picture. I love wide-angles, but I've never got THAT close to a subject. You were lucky not to get your camera licked!

Great.. funny & interesting postings on here... love the spring stream shot.. think it is worthy of its own posting on UF... & the cow shots are all greatly entertaining ) I do hope Steve is setting his camera in that shot... though it does look a bit embarrasing for him... lol... watch out Big Brother is watching !!!!!

Congrats on the Award.

Great shot, their size can make them quite indtimidating if you're not used to them (the cows that is not the DSLR, or Steve's anatomy for that matter!).
The exposure thing is overplayed and really not important here. What are you to do, play about with GND filters or grab the shot?
Reminds me of a time I was chased out of a field by an angry bull, making a passing resemblance to a Pamplona bullrunner, buggering up my jeans on a barbed wire fence as I scrambled over in terror!
Congrats on the PoD. Ian

ade mcfade   {K:12388} 5/15/2005
Hi David,

I've got 4 lenses at the moment, the one I took this with was a "short lens" - so one that has a wide angled view. Good for when you're stood near to something and still want to get it in the shot.

Short lenses usually allow you to focus a lot closer than long ones - but as in this case they have an amusing distortion effect!

the one I used on this shot was "Ultra Short" at 15mm, so I can focus at a few inches away.

If you've got an SLR then you too can change the lenses, though your copacts tend to have a large "zoom" on them.

All that means is that you can go from quite a wide angle (for landscapes) to a narrow one (for zoming in on birds). They tend to measure the lense lengths in the same terms as SLR's, so you may have a lens that goes from 35mm to 350mm equivalent (wide to telephoto), that's a zoom of 350/35 = 10 times.

It's all good fun though :-)

Out of all the images the one I liked the most is the first attachment, the main image is fun and yes it is an alternative perspective of the cow ?dangers for the lens!- but I agree with pat it?s a little bit over exposed while the other one is perfect!
Wonderful colors and details on the nose

Dude! Amazing! I can almost smell his/her breath. Way to capture the moment. Do you have adjustable lenses? I really need help on all the technical aspects. I've added this one to my favorites!

Fabulous close up, love the blade of grass on the nose, as wellas the whiskers. Excellent -

Ade,

Looks like you guys are have great time again and again ! Those cows were perhaps looking for feed as the farmers bring feed to them.

Interesting report.

regards,
ken.

A shame abou the unavoidable 'blow-out' on the top of the cow's head, Ade, but still a marvellous shot ~ as is the udder one!!
Best regards, Chris
P.S. How about this one?

I think Steve was probably playing with something far monre innocent - but just could not resist putting that shot up! I may "enhance" it on Photoshop later!

Oh - never buy a DLSR, it's a money pit and all you want are bigger, brighter and better lenses. You think heroin addicts have it hard....?

They are good though :-)

Cheers

Great capture Ade. That one came out really well. I love the way the focus drops of quite quickly.... and yes, I do still like the camera :)

As for Steve.... I reckon he's helping to keep the bluebells alive by supplying some nutrients!

And its good to see Steve putting something back into the environment too!

Cows in wide angle are allways a good shot. This one is a bit over exposed and I wish for more DOF but still very fun to look at.. All in All I like it.
