City - New York State - NEW YORK Country - United States
About
The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge connects 2 of the 5 boroughs that comprise New York city, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Prior to its completion, Staten Islanders had to use the Staten Island ferry to cross to Brooklyn. From its opening on November 21,1964 until the opening of the Humber Bridge in England on July 17th 1981 the Verrazano-Narrows bridge was the worlds longest suspension bridge spanning 4260 ft (1299 mtrs) from tower to tower. Interestingly, the two 27,000 ton towers are 693 feet (211 mtrs) tall and are 1 5/8 inches out of parallel at the top to compensate for the curvature of the Earth. The height of the roadway actually rises 12 ft (4 mtrs) in the winter due to contraction of the steel support cables.
