About This huge butterfly 160mm size (6.5") was developping in the anteroom of our greenhouse today. I have never seen a butterfly this size in our garden before. Haven't found any clue in my butterfly books. If anybody knows this species, advices are very welcome.

It is quite frightening looking, those four large 'eyes' looking at you

Markus, a great cath of the moth. I see you confirmed my earlier suspicions. Well focussed and captured.

Hairy does not necessarily mean ugly - except for the humans maybe;-)

Je savais que c'était un phalène (papillon de nuit) il n'y a qu'eux qui sont aussi laids, sans vouloir vous offenser. Et c'est pourquoi j'ai parlé d'ours... ils sont poilus.
Merci,
drilan

Now that I more or less understand what you will be doing I can wish you good luck.
Thanks also for being a good friend and for the (less important) information about the butterfly.
Good luck once more and best regards,
Rafi

Here is a site, where the butterfly is described. Obviously the largest European butterfly.

Regards, Markus

Dear Rafi, I retired as a Siemens executive manager in Vienna three days ago. For three years now I'm lecturing in "Effective management and team working" at the universities of Klagenfurt in Carinthia and of Technology in Vienna. I have found out the species of the butterfly, which is a "Large Emperor Moth" (Wiener Nachtpfauenauge or saturnia pyri). More details under tpittaway.tripod.com/silk/s_pyr.htm.

Regards, Markus

Great details, Markus and big butterfly indeed. Love the title you chose, too.

Incroyable le genre de bibites que vous avez dans votre pays ; ici nous avons des ours, des castors, des... mais pas des papillons qui ont l'air de Boeing

Thanks, Rafi. I retired on Wednesday from my active professional work. I worked 31 years for a big company and thats over now. I still have lectures at the University of Klagenfurt and the Technical University of Vienna, but that's not a big deal.

Kind regards, Markus

I don't know who they are, but they're excellent macros, both of them, with all their features clearly visible.
Thank you for your warm words about my "I am Yoav!" ( he is our second eldest grandson), my "Violet hibiscus, detail 2" and my "Too much wine..."
Also for your congrats.
Best regards,
Rafi

I looked in our book and can't find him, either. He is very pretty.
