Hi James, First of all, thanks for your recent comments, much appreciated.

As to the light, it looks to me a rather dull, overcast day, resulting in a rather flat light; normally not the best lighting conditions; This results in a somewhat low contrast, making the detalis in the dark parts harder to distinguish... Naturally, I wouldn't pass on such a shot just because the weather is not "Top Notch", and I do think improving on the exposure and image quality is a substantial challenge.

In short, the comment on the lighting had nothing to do with the shot itself, but more on the factors out of the range of control.

Cheers,

Hugo

Thanks for your comment Gary. Just remember to remove your lens using the lens release on the teleconverter. A couple of times, I used the lens release on the body out of habit, and got some dust on the sensor which I then had to clean off. :)

Thanks for the comment Hugo. What's wrong with the light?

I have no complaints with the Canon teleconverter, but would normally prefer shooting without it. Using it the way I did in Africa sure beats cloning out dust on thousands of images.

The image is the full frame, and I had set the composition for the bird just standing there with a nice reflection, and then it flexed its wings. There wasn't time to reconsider the composition at that point. :)

Hi James, the weather has been playing tricks on you here. The setup of the shot is possibly as strong as ever, but the lack of selective lighting was not on your side this time...

I see you're pretty fond of the teleconverter. I tried one a few times, but never felt it gave me the edge, as I feel I need to compromise my settings too much. Do you compensate that with a higher ISO sensitivity? I can see why you need the higher focal lenght with these wildlife shots, though.

As to the composition, The top of the wing in the reflection being severed by the frame does make me wonder if you have cropped this one, or if it's a full frame shot. I think panning down a bit, allowing a bit more water below the Stilt (if the surroundings would've allowed that) would create a bit more balance here. No need to say it still is a way above average shot...:)

Cheers,

Hugo
