Thanks Angelo, NO, I'm not but I think I figured out what I was doing wrong. Sometimes when I add a fram it does get bigger than 800X800 then I would resize the photo to get it into the proper size range. This. I think is what was doing it. Notice the last hummer really didn't have any pixilation.

James,
This is simply superb! Beautiful bird, perfectly placed, and a wonderful background, in complementing colours and nicely out-of-focus.
Great job!
As for your problem with uploading: by any chance are you going over the pixel or file size limit with your submission?

This is a very good capture. The DOF is superb and very nicely blurred background.
The things which can be improved are an off center composition giving more breathing space infront of the bird and not on its back as the whole left frame has no interest. Using a faster shutter speed to get a little more detail in the bird's wings and yet capture the motion trails and a fill flash depending upon the lighting conditions. About the picture quality it not only has jpg compression artifact but aslo has lot of sharpening artifact. This is usually seen using unsharp mask and then saving for web in medium quality. Most of the quality is lost. Using sharpening pluggins for photoshop result is more accurate and detailed output Then upload here also changes the image parameters of the photo. Larger images are down sized (happened to me on my last upload too) which also takes away much of the detail. As many times you open work and save a jpg it loses quality that many times in every step.
Anyway these small bit are not decreasing the overall high aesthetic value of the photo.
Kind regards.

I love the background - such a really pretty, soft [gentle] looking, [not meaning anything wrong with the image -] composition. and yes I do enjoy Margaret

Still without seeing the original I find this shot to be very natural and calming. Good work.

Yamil, I just visited your portfolio and it is excellent. I am so jealous of your wildlife photo's as well as the job you have. My passion is nature and the outdoors. Unfortunately I took the path or a profession that has me inside all of the time. Thanks you so much for your comment and the invite to view your pics. I look forward to seeing more of the beautiful creatures you have in the jungles of Costa Rica. I dont know if you have seen my portfolio but it is full of bugs, animals and birds. Please take a look and enjoy.

Well, whatever you're doing--keep doing it! This is really great.
You might have lost some quality in the resizing. I find my images are sometimes not as sharp as the original versions for that reason.

I just wish I could capture a hummingbird, tried while I was down in Guatemala last summer, but they are too quick. I think it is great still yet with movement, and the background colors add interest and texture to the photo. Alison

Well I think you are too hard on yourself. This is a beautiful image. I have been trying to shoot these little guys, but they are difficult for me. Your colors are great. Nice work.

James, the web uses SRBG. Did you convert to SRGB prior to uploading (it will be converted if you didn't, and that will cause some change in colors). Did you start off as a RAW file or jpeg? Each time you save a jpeg, you are going to lose some data. I'm assuming you used Photoshop for editing. Did you use Unsharp Mask as your final step in editing the photo? After Unsharp Mask, add your copyright information, and Flatten all layers (or Merge Layers if Flatten isn't available) Then select Save for Web. It is a nice photo, by the way!

well james I am definitely not a bird fotographer but this is simply outstanding. the background is superb and I personally think it improves the foto dramatically by giving 'a sense of place' -- a habitat if you will. and the colors of the background are so well coordinated. I also enjoy the aperture you chose. just enough depth to draw me in deeper. what a splendid fotograph and terrific composition. WELL DONE!!!
