About Haven't gotten an overcast day - but, to date, this is the best shot of a full blown hybiscus I have managed to capture. At least this one doesn't quite look like a neon sign! This hasn't been adjusted. Tried playing with PS - but wasn't able to do much to improve. HELP!

Peter - thank you so much! Your "play" (skill) has made the photo look so much better, and you were playing with the original. I uploaded the original without any adjustments, because everything I tried in PS didn't work. I think this was uploaded before you told me about curves - but there sure is a lot to learn on how to use that feature so that you get the results that you want. Seems like if just one little thing is off, it messes up everything else. Practice, practice. Thanks again - I appreciate all the advice you have been giving me - you are a good friend! Jan

M. Zafar - thank you for your help. I am making a record of the suggestions so that I can try and implement them.

Hi. Janice. I did not find the make of your Cybershot camera. I think it will have atleast 3X or 4X optical zoom plus a digital zoom. A 2.8 will give a lot of sharp background using it in wide angle mode but will nicely blur the background if used in full zoomed-in mode. Longer the focal length more will be the blur of the background at wide apertures. So try using these shots in full zoom mode without using the digital zoom as using digital zoom will make the image less detailed and soft.

Anyway. As it sharp and nicely detaied and the colors are fabulous.

Kind regards.

M. Zafar - I am just learning about photography and have an older Cybershot camera. I don't know what I need to do to get a "longer focal length", and is a wider aperture a higher f stop? (Think my little camera is on f 2.8 & I thing that means that the lens is small and is not letting in a lot of light.) I am trying to find some basic photography Thanks for taking the time to comment. I enjoyed reading the comments and lively discussion that was posted on Photo.net regarding your beautiful backlit autumn tree and mist landscape.

Nice detailed shot. Good saturated colors. The background is a bit distracting and takes the eyes away from the main subject. Isolating a flower in this composition of using a long focal length and a wider aperture would have given a much better result. Also try to position the main subject off center in the composition.

Anyway looks nice as it is too.

Kind regards.

It's a lovely picture, Janice. Too bad the blooms last for such short time. Your detail and composition are very nice.

Thank you Gilberto. Reds sure are a challenge to get right, and I am still struggling. Will just have to keep trying until I get something that I am happy about. The blooms this go round are the prettiest they have ever been. The plant is loaded with them, so may get a really good shot one of these days.

Looks like you've over sharpened it a little. You can use your median filter to fix this... I've playedwith your photo a little. See attachment.

Here's a WEB site that has a PDF that shows how to reduce the saturation with the "curves" tool. I use this in my Paint Shop Pro also.
