About This young male is displaying and singing to attract a female. Unfortunately, there seem to be no females here yet. As you can see, the snow is still falling and the females are much too smart to leave the warmer southern climes just yet.

I used a Gitzo 1325 tripod with a Kirk BH-1 ballhead and on-camera Canon 420EX flash. The image is cropped down to about 30% of full frame.

Bill: This was almost exactly a year ago. It kept snowing every few days and the male Red-Wings were here looking for mates. Unfortunately, they ladies had not arrived yet. This is a young one and I guess he needed the practice.

Margaret: Yes, we are still receiving snow almost daily. It isn't staying with us and melts immediately. That's the price we pay for living at 9100' of elevation. Thanks for your kind comments.

Oh my word you still have snow, lovely composition - our blackbirds do not have any colour like this one

Andre: We see them in large flocks in the spring and in the fall, many more, including females, in the fall as they pass through. By May, they will be moving on. A few stay for the summer here in the Colorado Rockies.

Fred, A beautiful shot of this bird. Nice detail in the eyes (hard to get with the bird being all black in that area) Great detail in the red and orange on the wing. We have a lot of them in our area. Do they stay in your elevation, or are they just passing through?

Dave: I don't know why we have them here at 9100 feet of elevation. Seems a bit silly on their part considering there are no females in residence as of yet.

Kevin: They're pretty skittish. We have a flock of about 12 males here and no females. They are very entertaining as they display and call for mates and there are none yet. This one was about 40-45 feet off our deck. When I get my 500 and 2x I should be able to fill the frame with them.

Beautiful shot of the blackbird, Fred! I'll be trying for them, again, pretty soon! I haven't seen any here yet this year.

Nice detail on this bird! We get a lot of those red-winged suckers in Northern California, but I've never been able to see one up close like this. Very cool.
