I guess my first advice would be to expose for the brightest spots in the frame, and then bring up the darker tones afterward if you must.
You did a good job of that in the original photo, I see! ;)

....Gaja...tu l'as fait....c'est un superbe auto-portrait, très bien retravaillé.....avec un très bon choix de tonalité...c'est un premier essai qui aurait peut-être mérité d'être vertical
