Yes Dan....I DO know what DOF is. Many of your best shots exhibit limited DOF in order to make a certain portion of a composition "stand out" or to add drama to an image. And yes, I understand the integral function that the aperture (F-stop) serves. My reason for questioning the selective focus on this particular shot is that everything in your picture is (reasonably) in focus, EXCEPT the Stigma. In other words, if you were "selectively" focusing on the petals of the flower, I might have expected the background (stem and leaves) to ALSO be slightly out of focus, like the Stigma is, in the foreground. With regard to the "halo"....bad description on my part. What I'm referring to is what I perceive to be an unnatural transition between the flower petals and the stark black background. The fact that there is light hitting the edges of the petals, looks a little funny (to me) against the black.
Whew....you KNOW that you are my favorite! C'mon man...It's a RARITY when I see something in one of your shots that I don't love!

Brad I would think that a man of your technological prowess would know what DOF is. In any camera, there is only one true plane that is truly in focus. Closing down the aperture increases the acceptable range that objects appear to be in focus. With all the planes involved in this complex geometry, I chose to present this flower in this manner. By rotating the flower?s stamen slightly further away, it would have been in better focus, but I would have ruined the angle on the petals, and lost the beautiful detail, I had achieved. Remember Brad, everything in photography is a balancing act.You also mentioned the Halo. I dont see it maybe your monitor needs calibration. Thank you for your comment my dear and trusted friend.

Incredible beauty! However, I'm not sure I like the black background....it adds a "halo" effect around portions of the flower, and looks (to me) unnatural. I'm surprised, at F29, that the DOF is is limited as it is. The stigma(s) are out of focus...Perhaps intentional? Is there any way that you can "dial it all into focus"??? Having said that...the details of the petals and stem/leaves are absolutely riviting! The colors are wonderful. Man....don't comment on any of my shots....I'm gonna get crucified! Have mercy, Dan..

That really does look a useful feature, on this size image there is visibly zero noise!
The actual image is also pretty fine, wonderful detail and clarity, I especially like the texture and patterns in the petals and how their lines draw you into the flowers centre.
Thanks.

This is stunning! Totally free of noise with remarkable detail. And the lighting is perfect. Dan, because of your water drop technique I had to buy a macro lens. Are you now going to force me to buy a 20D? ;-)
