About On January 22, 2003 Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City, announced that the city has given permission to New York artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude to realize their temporary work of art:The Gates, Central Park, New York, 1979-2005.

The 7500 Gates, 16 feet (4.87 meters) high with a width varying from 5' 6" to 18 feet (1,67 m to 5,48 meters) will follow the edges of the walkways and will be perpendicular to the selected 23 miles of footpaths in Central Park. Free hanging saffron colored fabric panels suspended from the horizontal top part of the gates will come down to approximately 7 feet ( 2,13 meters) above the ground. The gates will be spaced at 12 foot (3,65 meter) intervals, except where low branches extend above the walkways allowing the synthetic woven panels to wave horizontally towards the next gate and be seen from far away through the leafless branches of the trees. The temporary work of art The Gates is scheduled for February 2005, to remain for 16 days, then the 7,500 Gates shall be removed and the materials will be recycled.

I will show another of my shots below.

Really nice composition here, Alison, and it shows the "gates" off nicely. There's even a touch of reflected color in the water, which is nice. I'm probably an uncultured heathen, but I find the whole "gate" think pretty silly (and expensive) *except* in a few photos here on Usefilm: the real artists are here.

This is the best one of the series Alison! The footbridge gives this shot an added appeal and great easel for the flags! The colors are so good!Even a couple little reflections in the water! The flags are beautifully lit Alison! Nice work here! Take care Friend.....John

Hi, Alison. You have captured the light beautifully.

And I am intrigued to see how many people are traveling through the gates and over the bridge.

It is definitely a happening. Thanks for sharing.

I looks like it's on fire. You certainly made the most of this. I think this is a case where your pictures are better than the real thing.

Hi Alison,
So far I have gone through upto 10 pages of your portfolio today. Amazing images !! Very commendable portfolio you have. Multi Colored Aftenoon, An Arch to Nowhere, I Should have Gone South, The Wheel, Autumn Poets Sing NYC Blue, A Dog's Life, From the MoMa Out ... to name only a few and praise. The variations on Maple leaves are excellent. Very vivid and artistic.. Regards,
Bikas

I love the way the light catches the panels in this one, Alison - such a burst of color against that gray backdrop! From the thumbnail it looks like a string of japanese lanterns!
