Cheryl I think its just a goofy lens ( not good from the factory) I can have focus and watch it fade in and out as though there where heat waves between me and the subject. However when I took the deer photos at 300MM and they where mushy , that pretty much did it;-( Luckily I have a camera store in the twin cities, which allows me to take merchandise for up to 30 days and return or exchange if I am not happy. I pay a little more than say B&H Photo, but Monday I will be using the a different lens. I also read the comments on the lens and found the typical, " a bit soft at 400 wide open" but I shot 300 200 actually it was pretty good at 100. Todays posting " Sunrise on the Point" was at 400 but I had to go through 6 images to find the fairly sharp one. Not a problem for landscape, but Wildlife ! Sometimes you only get one quick shot and that has to be a good one. Thanks for your comments jc

I can see where that could be an issue...do you have a filter on it? Perhaps the filter is throwing it off. My 100-300 was giving me fits but I realized it was the polerizer filter on there and have been much happier since I cleaned the smudge I couldn't see previously. I am just suprised because that is an expensive lens (relatively) and I would expect more given the reviews I found on it. Sorry it's not working with you...I hope you find peace soon. I know how frustrated you must be. :) Sincerely...

Cheryl REgarding the lens, I spent a lot of money to improve on what I was using. This lens ( probably the one I have) doesn't continually put of sharp images. I tested it on the tripod this morning with IS shut off and unless there is high contrast I can't get a sharp image. I do wildlife, and landscape most of the time. I shot deer photos the other day in very good light and was really disapointed. I am going to get the 70-200 2.8L, with a 1.4 extender, and try that out. I have to have sharp images !! jimc

Wow - saw a reference to this in Greg McLemore's photo and I have to agree - this is incredible. What didn't you like about this lens? Great work here. The colors are rich, the sun is perfect (perhaps you hurt your eyes taking it?)...the sky is AMAZING here and the horizon is spot on. Well done.
