mark,
i decided on adding grain to go along with the subject's pocky skin. looking back now, i think i may have goone too far with it. sublety would have been more effective. this was taken a local hand wash car wash. i asked he (and several other of his co-workers) to pose for me. with the wide angle on the camera, i had to walk right up to his face to snap. this technique usually elicits looks of surprise.
cheers,
erik

I have seen this extraordinary shot once before and didn't have time to comment. Cruising thru your portfolio this time I thought I'd leave a comment. This is a great shot, and superb use of wide angle in a portrait. Obviously the focal length gives an odd look to a face, but this one is interesting enough to bear up (so rich in details of shapes, skin, eyes, beard, etc). I can't decide if I like the grain or not, which I assume you added, but I must say it goes wuite well with the mood and tones in the shot. The monochrome toning is working well here too. Did you just see this guy and ask to take his picture? I haven't had the nerve to try that, at least not yet. But then again, I don't have your portraiture skills either! Anyway, great work Erik!

Great textures in this piece, and the depth of field and grain in the back works quite nice. The angle of the face works perfect with the expression. Nice job.

Thilo,
Thanks Man. I hope I didn't overdo the grain effect. I just it would go well with the subnject's ruddy face.
Cheers,
Erik

I think I prefer this one over the earlier coloured version. It's a very strong portrait. One of the things I like about your portrait work is that they are all unique. There is a lot of diversity in them.
