I'm not sure I understand all the technicalities... although I do think it's a great portrait. Could you obtain similar result just with a strong frontal light, white background and using a high contrast and low exposure time in the darkroom? Just curious...

Hi Carsten, Very successful high key photo. I do like you preserved the details without blowing everything out. The piercing eyes come out beautifully, with just about the right amount of contrast, and the gentil smile and slightly lowered head are the key elements for a great portrait.

Thank you, Mark for your comment. Kind of walk on the wild side for me, because portrait is not my usual cup of tea, esp the high key. Tried numerous versions and techniques. Glad to hear that it looks nice for you.

I love the simplicity of this image as a contrast to some of your more robust undertakings. Its not that this is better, just different and terrific in its own right.

A beautiful girl and gorgeous eyes...

Superbly captured and composed. The high key is beautiful here. Love the light and the soft tones...

Beautiful work, compliments!

What a coincidental resemblance with my 'her face' ;) and thanks for your comment on that one.

Thank you very much for your detailed comment. As many of us, I started with film many years ago, then after a stagnation had a renaissance of my interest in photography with the upcoming digital. Now, after some learning curve with PS I feel "fit" and have a need for concentration more on composition, on non-tech skills in photography and I am looking for helpful comments to get better. Seems that usefilm is quite a good platform for my need.

This is lovely. Her eyes are indeed exquisite, and I enjoy this high key treatment. Just read your explanation as to how you achieved it and it seems you are well-versed in PS! The language of that program can be complicated and there are so many ways to phrase the same thing, and each way gives it's own nuances (like German and English, no?). You commented about your experience in Photonet. I tested the waters there just before discovering Usefilm, and this is definitely a more enjoyable site. Have been here since October and love it. It is very well designed and the people are fantastic. Welcome! T.

I chose a yellow background and shot en face to emphasize her eyes. After conversion to a 48bit TIFF I chose a yellow filter setting for B&W conversion to get a white background, but was not satisfied with the result. For B&W I used a PS plugin (Convert to B&W pro). I converted to three different TIFFs, yellow filtered, with optimal settings for soft skin tones, high contrast eyes, and some detail for the burnt out left shoulder. Composite of these TIFFs with PS, at last a color dodge mask for the face, optimized with a curves adjustment layer. Sharpening after resizing.

Wow, great site - a couple of minutes in usefilm, and you comment and welcome me. Thank you very much. I posted this in PhotoNet and was a bit frustrated by anonymous low raters leaving no comment...

Carsten, this is a great effort especially considering it's your first attempt. Could you explain a little how you obtain the high key effect. I would be interested to know. Thank you!
