About My first real posed portrait. I set the background, lighting, pose, and shot. I am very interested in thoughts and feedback so I can learn what I did right and what I could do better. I will post another one or two for contrast.

Paul, your help is greatly appreciated. The main reason I wanted to post this was to get constructive feedback like yours. I will try your suggestions. I have the ability to try 3-point light and will do it.

Thanks again and happy holidays.

With a dark background and such prominent key lighting, it helps to place a light behind her to create a rim of light (or at least a lit edge) that separates her from the enveloping darkness.

I realize I'm suggesting 3-point lighting instead of how to help this print, but that's the principal thing I see, Mark.

While I don't know much about lighting and portraiture, this seems to be a great picture.

The contrast works well, with the back darkground, compaired the the beautiful lady, and her clothing.

I like the pose also; many photographers never pose their subjectswell, having the person face directly into the camera. The lady could face the other way equally well.

I'd say that this one is quality work, and doesn't need much of anything. Natural beauty, great pose, good lighting,?

Looks good to me.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, Art. I agree with all of your points. In the original, my father-in-law (usefilm member Larry Quigley) was standing to my daughters left holding a white card trying to get some hairlight.

My biggest problem is that I have one strobe. Larry just ordered another for his D70, so we will have two between us and should make a big difference. We just rigged the background with a piece of black cloth we had. I had several that had much better separation, but the expression wasn't what I wanted. My daughter has final veto power on everything I take of her.

Anyway, thanks again and look for me to follow your advice!

Mark

Hi Mark!
I like this one very much! Is like an antiquie postcard...great pose and pretty model.

Thank you for your comment in Peek A Boo! (I'm the mother with the baby in Maria's photo...) As you can imagine, I didn't have much time to upload any photo lately but I hope I can show some of my baby!

Congrats
Grisel

Nicely done Mark. I have been trying to get into portraits too but don't have the guts to post any. You are right, this is a classic and the model is stunning (your daughter I think). Three comments. You need to separate the hair color from the background colour to get more depth (Possibly a different colour of background). Lighting from the front (side?) seems a little weak (flat). Maybe a hairlight from the back rear would add some sparkle too. Other than that, a good shot and extremely good pose. Keep it up.

Now this is so much better than the previous one, Mark. At least I think so. The beauty of the model comes alive with the colors, both of her face and of her clothes.
Thank you for your kind remarks on my "Lamps".

Beautiful lighting on the beautiful model. Here are my thoughts; crop about half the distance from top of head to frame. This will make the subject look taller. In most portaits the near side of the face to camera should be in shadow. For this lighting the subject should be facing the other way. I have a few other suggestions for later. You are off to a great start. Don.
