About This train was moving and I hand held the camera. I guess I thought I was panning? Have never tried this before.

I've tried this before, without much success. It is harder than it looks.

Perhaps a levelled and balanced tripod would help, with a longer shutter speed. Standing objects in the foreground or background might add to that perception of speed. I have tried getting the trains partly coming toward me, with a small apeture and slow shutter (1/8-1/2s). But somehow it didn't work as well as I had hoped. Unfortunately, the trains will not pause for you do a retake, so the learning curve is slow. You need to be really well prepared when you feel that train coming. I've often wondered what a second curtain flash would add to this kind of shot. I guess it would have to be quite powerful to have an appreciable effect.

I have seen panned shots with image stabilizing lenses that looked pretty good. However a low tech solution would be nice. This is a pretty good first try, Debbie.
